Been a while since I posted. Here's my 2013 archery buck.
I hunted as smart as I knew how this season, hunting less than I ever have (only hunting the right spots at the right times). Patience and persistence (to details) paid off, Tuesday. I arrowed this buck at 7:10 Tuesday morning, as he was walking behind a doe. Shot was a "little" back and a "little" high, but I thought I heard him crash.
I looked at my arrow through my binos and I couldn't even make out the fletching on it. It was soaked. But, I wasn't sure if it was blood or guts. I didn't think I hit him that far back, but you guys know how the mind can race during these times. I waited thirty minutes and the more I thought about it, the more I remembered he was slightly quartering away when I shot him. When I snuck down, I checked the arrow and smelled it. It wasn't guts.
Not as much blood at the POI as I wanted, so I looked a short ways on the trail. I saw nothing that convinced me he was a goner, so I decided to back out and return in several hours. I have a very limited point of ingress/egress to this spot, so I had to sneak the last little bit on a line that would have me 80yds or so parallel to the trail he busted out on. As I was sneaking the last few yards, I thought I saw something white across the creek. It couldn't be.......could it? I put my binos up and confirmed it was the belly of my buck. Hallelujah.
He's the second biggest buck I've taken, and he's at the taxi as we speak. I felt completely blessed to have been able to take him. He taped out a little over 120", with "H" measurements being almost 31". MB's were between 23" and 24", each. Inside spread was just under 15".

Congratulations on the dandy buck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
