Have a deer near my house that I named "Tom Cruise" because he loved the camera so much in September. I was on the fence on this deer as far as age, but after seeing him today, I believe he is a 3.5 year old 10 point that has now broken off both brow tines, I was hesitant about the shot because there are two other bucks in the area that are much bigger and older, and let him get away, but I got to observe him go to bed and thought the guys on this forum would appreciate a visual/story.
Keep in mind this is basically flat ground, and the buck is bedding in a bend in the creek, the creek borders a field and to the north and west there is not a tree for 5 miles (not an exaggeration). So he can see a long way. I use the creek to access and hunt near the yellow icon.
Basically he approached the bed with the wind at his back, checked it visually, then made a big loop (hook) into the open corn field and around to the far side approaching with the wind in his face and laying down. Neat to watch one do that.

Cool example, a nice big hook to sniff anything on his trail. I've seen them do if the opposite way too, scent the bed quick and then go well past it and loop around so they can still scent their back trail.

One thing I forgot to mention, As you can tell he passed down wind of me twice. The first time at about 30 yards, he just stopped and looked in my direction, then worked a scrape. I was only about 16 feet up because of the tree I was in, but when he looped back around, he was much farther out and he stood and stared for several minutes that time, but evidently he couldn't get a good whiff because as noted he bedded down in the same wood lot I was in.

Is that yellow marker your stand? If so, do you think he may have winded you and turned around to bed where he did?

Nice illustration.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
