The 2ft Buck
Went on a quick hunt to SW Wis. over the weekend. Planned on hunting Sat eve through Tues Morning. I arrowed a decent 2.5 yr old 8pt Sunday morning at 11am which walked literally 2ft from the base of my tree. I think he was really late heading back to his bedding area which was either on the point I was hunting or the next ridge across the bottoms. I drew on him as he circled around the point through some tall grass and as I drew he turned and walked straight at me. I held my draw and he paused when he got directly under me so I shot hitting him just off the spine and I got a good crack! The arrow buried to the knock and I had a decent angle with the arrow angling toward the opposite lung a bit. My guess is liver and one lung. He ran about 40 yds and stopped then trotted off with his tail down around the "corner of the point"l I gave him an hour and looked for only about 10 yards for blood and arrow but found nothing. I backed out and gave him 4 hours. My cousin and I went back and he slipped around the downwind side of the point just in case this buck was still alive and tried to slip away. I followed the heavy blood from where he had stopped. It looked like liver and I thought he would be lying just around the corner. I followed the blood around and found where there were stumbling tracks all the way down the big hill. We followed the tracks with sparse blood which eventually stopped. Hmmmm, we got to the bottom and lost the trail. My cousin said he thought we pushed him because he thought he heard something and the blood down the hill was still wet. We backed out and decided to look in the morning. In the morning I checked all of the bottoms with tall grass and crp but found nothing but an old wild boar skull. Not sure how that ended up there. Anyhow, I met up with my cousin about 10am and told him I thought the deer crossed the road and made it up the next ridge some how. Also, the crows seemed to be active on the next ridge that morning. About 11am I ran up the next ridge and it didnt take long to find what was left of my deer. The coyotes devoured him completely. They even ate his nose and tongue and the bones were "clean". Wow unbelievable. I tagged what was left of the animal and named him the 2ft buck because I shot him 2ft from my tree and when I found him all that was left was 2 feet.

Congrats!! Freakin yotes eh!!! Happened to me last year. Those yotes are thick in SW WI. We've had them on deer within two hours of the shot down there!! Nice buck anyway!! Maybe a MOD could move this to the kill zone??
