Not so good-buck experience.....
Morning,
Just back from archery hunting my property, Vernon county, sick to my stomach.
Left last tuesday and home today.
Deer movement very poor, last 15 minutes before dark they moved...mostly all does.
Yesterday morning (Friday) about 7:40 a.m. filmed (go pro) a 140 + class buck from my left approaching my shooting lane, deer stood 26 yards broad side, drew back aimed and released arrow. Arrow seemed to come off rest very poorly, might have hit a little tree to the right and the arrow veer'd to the left about 18.0" and struck the deer in the right rear thigh.
terrible, terrible....
Deer ran off, I waited for an hour plus. Found my lighted nock arrow which you can see in video. Video not the best. You can see the deer and the arrow flight, thus the assumption of what happened. Might have been not looking through the peep site.....i doubt it.
I trailed this deer for over 4.5 miles and three different properties (with premission), no deer. When this deer went uphill, lost blood trail....then found blood drops, specs where the topography flatten out. Seems as though he stood for a little bit, pool'd blodd then nothing. Never once laid down, might have pushed him, dont know.
Started trailing him about 8:45 a.m. and all good blood sign. Finally stopped about 1:10 p.m. Cold, rainy and windy....hungry no less I started to make phone calls for assistance...no one available.
Ate some peanut butter and honey sandwhiches at truck and and an apple. Now 3 p.m. I decided to go home, most blood what little I could find would have been washed out. Weather was not conduvise to trailing deer blood.
The most southern land owner called me back and left a message that there were a couple of hunters coming up this weekend and would be more than happy to call me if they should happen to come across the deer........nice.
Overall not sure what happened but can barely stay focused today with domestics.......Will most likely will hunt tonight in Waukesha and hunt tomorrow once again. Like falling off a horse or bike get back up and try again...
One of the toughest hunts (solo) that I have been on.
p.s. lost 7 lbs and a little bit of confidence.........
Once I have time I will try to down load video for input....although comments or suggestions might be welcome....be nice. lol
thanks for reading.........

Man I feel bad for ya, why does that stuff seem to happen on the nice ones...( probably why the get so big ) anyway this season has been an adventure for me as well so far...no shots yet, but trying to find the deer I had followed all summer seemed to move out because of human pressure.... But gotta keep tryin.. Good luck to you ..

Sh** happens Robert.
Femoral hits are very lethal, and very quick. So I doubt that's what happened here. Muscle hits not so much.
He'll probably be fine.
It sucks!
But it is what it is.
And it's the rut, get out and enjoy it!

Re: Not so good-buck experience.....
The silver lining I always look at when I blow an opportunity at a big buck, is that I was able to get an opportunity at a big buck. This was only of consolation to me as the opportunities came about less on luck and more by plan, strategy, etc... This encounter should build your confidence in your strategy, scouting, stand placement etc... More opportunities will come...
Tough to learn from a mistake when you are not sure what happened but try to glean what you can and move forward with it.

Go outside, shoot some arrows. rebuild your confidence. Tell yourself what a good shot you are and go kill a big one.

Re: Not so good-buck experience.....
I wounded a great buck then killed one 5 days later. It can be done Robert.
I shot a lot of arrows to rebuild confidence in my shooting and kept telling myself I WILL get another chance and I did. I think people underestimate the power of confidence and positive thinking in relation to hunting even life in general.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
