The ferrules and tips were unscathed.

Had to hammer them out:

Blades held up well too:

Except for the damage that I caused by removing them they held up great.

Thanks to JRM for sending me the Vortex to test.

How far away was the shot? I would like to see a fixed blade shot at the same scenario.

That top/first pic looks like the blades on the Vortex head went all the way thru versus the Rage head. Am I right?

I pulled the wood chips out of the way to show how one of the blades of the Vortex was almost open by the time it got through. I would expect the blade fully open by the time the head got through the near ribs. The penetration was nearly identical and I think that's because the Rage blades were fully open on the entrance which slowed it down on the pressbboard. For sure you'll get a better entrance wound with the rage but more internal carnage with the Vortex. Exit wound should be better on the Vortex. I would guess the penetration on game should be a little better with the Rage as it was a wash and the rage was fully deployed before entry.

I think it just depends on what you want. I was impressed with both. JRM has been using the Vortex for years and his results speak for themselves. I killed some deer with the original Snypers but wasn't crazy about the oring retention system of the rage and the COC tip was weak in testing. This new rage chisel tip design and retention system is pretty solid I think now.

I just wanted to make sure the ferrule and the tip design held and it's plenty solid. IMO

X3 I am also surprised the penetration of the two heads was about the same.

Thanks for posting your results!

And the penetrating king

Second shot with same Muzzy:

Third shot with a new Muzzy 125:

Sorry for the picture quality I just lifted weights and I was shaking.

The trocar tip is unmatched on hard surfaces.

That's why the Old Steelhead 125s were penetrating monsters.

Thanks for doing the Muzzy 125 test. 8-)

That is what I shoot and am not surprised by the results. Remember the old steel barrel test they did on Muzzy heads years ago? Dan Fitzgerald was big on that test and did it many times on video. The heads passed completely thru both walls of the barrels with no damage!

It was nice to see how the vortex head held up. I've never tested them except on deer.
With that 2-1/2" on them they do alot of damage and I like the way the blades bend instead of break.
I've been using those heads for going on 15 years I believe and have been really happy with them. The blood trails are unreal.
Here's and entrance and exit from them. When I skinned out this buck that is in my avatar pic i had broke a rib on the near and far side.

I'm not promoting using a mechanical over a fixed head at all. I've just had good luck with this head and like it.
I like the fact it has a 2-1/2" cut also. I've been hunting long enough to know that every shot situation is different and the extra cut can make a bad situation turn out to be a sucessful one.
