Go gutless and pack it out, I am hunting some stuff here in a few weeks that u woul need a helicopter to get one out, badlands 2200 or good pack frame and you an get a whitetail out in 1 or 2 trips.
There is a good video onhow to do it on a whitetail, you can cape the bucks on the ground.

I can butcher and cape in an hour. I'm just being stubborn. I want to pull him out. And I will have no help.

I can dig it. I'd rather pull em out too. Nicer to show off a whole deer instead of parts I have been wanting to buy one of those plastic snow sleds but they seldom sell them here, we don't get enough snow to sled on. I did see at a hunting store last weekend a heavier duty sled type thing made specifically for dragging deer, duck decoys, huntin stuff, whatever. I been thinkin of goin back for one.

I've used one of those, but not for pullin deer. Seems like it would be too time consuming. I think you'd make better time (and be considered more of a He-Man) if you drug him out taking periodic rests. If it come down to it, I'd drag. Cuttin him up would be a last resort.
And besides, I have son's within 25-40 miles. It's payback time for all those deer I dragged out when they were young. They could be on the spot before I made it out

Southern Man thanks for the input. I went on to you tube and saw how a come a long is used and you're right it's just too slow. I played around with a block and tackle I figured I could make one with 400' of Paracord. Well it started tangling on me at 12 feet LOL.
So I'm back to either using the waist strap on my cart and a rope tied to a tree (or tent stakes in the ground) to help me so I can pull up on the rope. Or a rope and a pulley that I'll tie high and then use my body weight to go down the ravine as it pulls the cart up.
I don't mind hard. It's just on a few of these situations simply dragging it out is not possible.

The sleds they have at walmart for a good price:

I just tested 3/8" rope and the locking pulley using my bodyweight to hoist it. Too much friction in the locking mechanism. Scratch that.

if the only way you have is up it can suck but if you just shot a slob what difference does it make. Slow and steady. I always thought a cheap atv winch and deep cycle battery attached it to a cart that hooks up to trees and you can do 25ft at a time.

Re: How do you pull them out of the ravines?
Well I went ahead and bought the rope puller and 200' of 1/2" poly rope. I figure in most cases I can just tie the rope to a tree and with the waist strap pull the cart up using both my arms and my legs but on the real steep stuff even if it's 20-50 feet I want to be sure I can pull the deer out. Might take some time but as long as I can do it that's fine.

I didn't think of it yesterday but I have what I call "fence stretchers". They were used to stretch barbed wire when putting up a fence. The old guys used them. It's a pulley system that allows you to pull less weight than actually is on the business end, kind of like a block & tackle. When you pull it, it will lock in place and not allow the rope to go backwards. But you can pull it again and gain more ground. I use it for hanging deer in my shed when I dress them. I put a 50' rope on it, which gives me about 12.5' of length, but you can use a longer rope if needed. It would work great for a steep incline where it's not feasible to drag.
If I can remember, I'll take a pic or two tonite and post for you to see. I don't know if you can buy them anymore, they were replaced by the come along. I got mine at a local flee market. If you're interested, I will see what I can find here local, they may still sell them somewhere.

That block and tackle with that sized rope should be pretty easy to keep from tangling. Anyone know where to get one?

Yea that's it. Mine's a little prettier I painted it red.
George, I'll check the local hardware stores, they use to carry them a few years back.
I used regular old 1/2" rope in mine but have thought 3/8" synthetic would do better.

Click on the link above the pics. That one is for sale along with some others on ebay like it. You can buy them new for about $80.
