vacation durring the rut?

Unread postby ONE UP » Wed Oct 02, 2013 10:39 am

Well I have some small funnel properties to hunt in Ozaukee county that seem to be most productive when bucks are in rut. My question is when do you think would be the better days to take off ? Oct. 29th-Nov.1st or Nov.5th- Nov.8th.

I've seen the biggest bucks within a couple of days of Nov. 8th during the rut.

I like first and second week of november for funnel hunting as cruising is in full swing. But I have killed more target deer in mid to late october before the chase really begins. A cold snap in late october can be deadly especially if you have your eye on a slob. I like to kill them before they start running all over the country. That's why I take the entire fall off and don't have to make those decisions. If weather cooperates both weeks should be good...

Option #1. Although my vacation is Nov 2nd - Nov 10th with a handful of before/after work hunts scattered +/- 1 week.

This is the case for me too. The biggest encounters every year are downwind of doe bedding.

Late October is my favorite despite my vacation plans.

My best rut days by far are Nov. 1st and 2nd every single year but that is not one of your options. I guess for you I would choose the earlier option since they are really increasing their cruising around Halloween. The mature bucks may be better in your later option but then you run the risk of getting into a lockdown. Seems to happen to me every year by the 10th.

In my thinking I like Your October option. You would probably see more bucks in the November time frame. I thinks your chance for a big one is better in October.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

For a bruiser, the first time frame is best if you know a good one is in the area. For best odds on a good buck, I would go with the later period. Those last days in Oct can be pretty slow if warm. This has been my experience anyways. Good Luck!

If you believe Alsheimers moon theory peak chasing in the north is like Nov.9-16th this season
Personally the last few days of Oct. and first week of Nov. have been great. I truly believe 90 percent of the does get bred the same time each season, the first ten days of Nov...

11/3-11/12 here in NE IL is the hottest time. Then there are some cruisers after that but the number of sightings goes way down.

I have off this year from Nov 1st - Nov 10th, but with that said, I had two bruiser bucks on trail cam the past two years on Nov 11th - 12th......They were cruising.... this is in S.W Wisconsin.

I agree with blackwolf, if you know a good one is in the area, late oct. early nov. you have a good opportunity to catch him on his feet early, but if nothing good is in your direct hunting area the later dates could be better to catch a dandy cruising longer distances. Herd age structure can play a big role in the movement you see.
