Govt Shutdown, Shuts Down My Deer Hunting

Unread postby James » Wed Oct 02, 2013 7:48 am

As some people are probably aware, I hunt a massive Federal Refuge close to home. All 25,000+ acres are now closed due to the government shutdown. In fact all 561 refuges are closed around the country. Sucks bigtime. I also just had my first encounter of the year with a mature buck and I was hoping to get back in there this weekend to close the deal on him.

I guess I'll have to go hunt some of my private stuff in WI this weekend. http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/open-c ... -other-fed

Good thing I can't hunt the next few weeks. I would be pretty darn upset. Hope this gets resolved very soon!

And what can stop you from hunting that refuge? The unemployed park ranger??? I would hunt it.

Is it really illegal to hunt there or are they just gated off? Might be able to bike in with your gear and have the place to yourself.

I would hunt it too. Not your fault or the parks fault that our government is tripping over its own feet.

One thing that could go wrong is that if you end up shooting a buck, jealous people could try to discredit you over it. I think to whole government shutdown thing is silly, maybe we need a new govt. I am thinking out loud again

Yup, because technically it would be a poached buck.

True, it would be a poached buck by definition.

Message on Federal Refuge website:

Due to the lapse in appropriated funds, all public lands managed by the Interior Department (National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, Bureau of Land Management facilities, etc.) will be closed. For more information, FAQs, and updates, please visit http://www.doi.gov/shutdown.

Not worth getting in trouble. Look at the bright side, maybe you'll find some more good spots because you are forced to go elsewhere.
