Points and Bedding- Public land

Unread postby dkoy85 » Thu Sep 26, 2013 6:51 am

I would consider the public land I'll be hunting for the first time this fall to be hill country. Steep and rolling drop offs dropping off up to 300 feet on all corners of the property. Bedding points facing every direction on a compass. My question is how likely is it that a buck will bed with the thermals rising in his face from the bottom and the wind coming from the top over his back? Is it very likely? Or more random than anything?

Assuming it is very likely, then I could eliminate a number of bedding points and focus on the points previously mentioned where the wind tunnel is created. It would drastically increase my chances on being in the right place at the right time. Essentially I'd confidently be able to pick a stand strictly on that days wind direction. Is this safe to assume?

Yes you are correct. Do you have the Hill Country DVD yet?? Bucks will also shift bedding positions on points when a wind shift dictates so.

Thanks PLB, good to know. I do not have the Hill Country Bucks DVD yet but will be ordering it soon. I'm very anxious to watch it!

They talk about that exact phenomenon in the Hill Country DVD! They adjust bedding according to the prevailing wind to maximize scent potential by using thermals to create a wind tunnel. Amazing stuff. I respect deer more and more each day when I learn what they do to survive.
