How many hours do you deer hunt a year?

Unread postby dreaming bucks » Tue Sep 24, 2013 6:02 am

I know it's a pretty vague question, & each year varies, but I'm just wondering how many hours you guys actually deer hunt ( bow & gun ) in a years time.... I'm probably on the lower end of the spectrum, with probably around 70-80 hrs in a tree.

Too many or not enough... depends on who you are talking to! :D

I'd say way over 100hrs in a tree, longest time in a week span was over 60hrs

I actually keep a log on this but don't have it near me right now. I think I average around 175 hours a year. My most was over 250 hours a few years back. Way too many all day sits that year!!!

[glow=red]Updated:[/glow]

Just checked my hunting logs and here are the exact hours I hunted since 2009. I work 2nd shift so my hunting time is limited to weekends and vacation time since I rarely hunt mornings outside the rut. Probably average 4 hours on a normal sit except for during the rut where I log at least 80-100 of those hours during a 2 week stretch with quite a few all day sits.

2012: 146 hours

2011: 198 hours

2010: 275 hours

2009: 145 hours

Not nearly enough. 4 kids and a bunch stupid responsibility keeps me out of the woods. Hunting and scouting.

I would say on average 120 Used to put in a lot more than that, but the sands of time have taken its toll.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

X2!

I expect to fall between 150 - 225 hours with 60-72 of those hours falling in a one week span in Late October - Early November. A lot depends on tag scenarios and how much time I put into the late season.

I kept a log in 2008 & 2009. Makes me laugh a bit...

Here is my season notes form 2008 (consistent time-wise (within reason +/-20%), deer sightings have been increasing most every year)

Season total of 2008 hunting statistics are;
* Deer sightings = 23 Deer.
** Hours on stand = 176 Hours hunted.
***Killed 8-Pointer (Muzzle) and 6-pointer (Bow)

Notes: 1) I had 8 opportunities to shoot deer. I missed the huge Doe while attempting a low percentage head shot with my muzzleloader.
I under shot the big doe during archery season, by misjudging my distance by more than 10 yards and know make sure I carry my rangefinder with me.
Trying to remember all the yardages at multiple spots is foolish. The other 6 deer I had chosen to pass on. This, of course, does not include the two bucks I did harvest.

2) Of the 23 deer I saw, the number of bucks is as follows;
An 8-pointer, two ~ 6-pointers, 4-pointer and a spike (5-total).

3) I hunted the wind to the best of my capabilities on nearly every sit this year.

4) I scouted throughout the off season, including shed hunting and trail cameras, approximately 50 – 60 hours.
Expect the Unexpected when you least Expect it...

I completed a bow hunters survey for the Iowa DNR last year and forgot to photocopy it before sending it back. :doh:

Part of it was how many hours in the stand, number of deer sighted, other game, etc. The number of hours I hunted last year was probably down, as I tried to hunt smarter rather than longer.

I'd say I spend about a 100 in the tree year. I did add up the hours i've spent on the road making the 3 hours trip to and from where I hunt every year and that totals around 60 hours a year, I don't even wan to talk about gas. Its all worth it though....

Probably around 150-200 but that is merely a guess. Only 12 or so this year so far.
