Velvet is gone

Unread postby Dewey » Sun Sep 08, 2013 6:22 pm

Just got home from shining and every single buck I saw was out of velvet. Didn't seem to matter big or small they were all pretty clean.

A few were still bloody red looking so thinking they may have just shed today. Here is video of one of the smaller ones taken with my iPhone. Sorry no zoom!

Can't see the blood on his rack real good in this video but think I may have caught him removing his velvet. When I first spotted him he was rubbing on a sapling.

Noticed the same thing for me this week. Checked some cams and 75% where out of velvet as of 2 days ago. But the largest buck I've been following all year was still full velvet as of yesterday. Lots of 1.5s still holding as well. Love seeing how they look hard horned. Some "shooters" are now no longer shooters and others look bigger. Fun stuff...

Saw a few scrub bucks last week all were still in velvet. They could be clean any day now.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Tweaking stand locations last Sunday and every buck I seen was hard horned. Kicked up a 150" buck that had velvet hanging from his rack, that was kinda cool.

I got pictures of one of my bucks Wednesday afternoon and he was in full velvet. Thursday at noon he was hard horned and polished up. I thought it was two different bucks but this one has a real unique inside kicker. The hard horned pics weren't too great. I'm hoping next week I'll have some real good pics to judge if they are the shooters I believe them to be.

Friday I glassed a ten that was still in velvet. Drove by a nice eight today that was hit and killed and it was all hard antler.
