Nov 13th, Too Late???

Unread postby Spysar » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:19 am

I'll be getting to Iowa on Nov 13th to start my hunt. Ideally, I'd get there a little earlier, but I can't.

I can stay at least 10 days, maybe more.

I think the big buck movement could be great, but I'm a little worried about being late.

What do you guys think? Will I see buck movement, or lockdown? I mean how bad can it be, I'll be in Iowa, right?

A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Mmmm, that's a tough one. . . You're literally getting there right at the tailwinds of the chasing, BUT have no fear, the deer will still be moving. Even when their locked down with does, their still nudging them all over the place. I believe the only difference you'll see is less searching bucks and more bucks hot on does. Rattling and calling will still be effective - there are always straglers looking for an opportunity to win a battle over a hot doe if he doesn't have one already. On the other hand, those with does are defensive as all get out and you know as well as I do their willing to fight if prompted... Snort/wheeze my friend, snort/wheeze.

Actually, my past experience has been that most of Iowa peaks around the exact time your going. Its been my experience that if you go the 1st week in November your a little early. I usually spend that 1st week in Wisconsin or Illinois and head to Iowa for rut starting about the 9th or 10th...

I've been down there a few times.
The 13th is late but not TOO late.
We went around 8th to 15th and saw just as much at the end as the beginning. I think there were plenty in lock down already. The beauty of IA is there are a lot of Bucks around. They ain't all locked down at the same time.
They sure are hard to stop for a shot though !!

Youll be hitting it perfectly I would say. There are a lot of big IA deer killed on video in the middle of Nov.

I would say the weather will play a part. Last year I went down with my brother on Halloween and the action was hot, until it got warmer around the 7th. It slowed down for awhile and then picked up again around the 14th ish...just my observation, we were in south central IA. My Dad was waiting cause he thought it would be better later and he missed a good couple of days, but had good action when the deer got moving again around the 14th.

I wouldn't rule out a weekend trip in the middle of October, we had good luck during a cold snap then as well...make sure to bring the rattlin' horns!!

Thanks for the input. I'm hoping I have the time to leave for the midwest early so I can get a couple of days scouting in Iowa, on my way to SD, and Nebraska.

The reason I can't get to Iowa sooner is because I'll be hunting in NE and SD first.
