Nothing completely out of velvet yet this year, but in past years I've seen them out as early as august 15th. And all were larger racked mature bucks. I am still expecting bucks to shed later this year than other because of recent pics and slow antler development this summer.

While shining, I saw a bachelor group of 6 bucks on the 23rd. All in velvet still.

Seems like the first ones lose velvet on 8-28 around here from what Ive seen.

Normally about the 1st of Sept. they start and by the end of Sept. most are clean. I have seen a few over the years clean end of August but that is not the norm/average.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

wow, that blows my mind, i checked cams 2 weeks ago and still had bucks with black rounded bulb on ends of tines still behind theres no way those deer on my place will be shedding yet. earliest i usually see on normal years was 8/28 i think and that was last year, lastest ive ever had one in velvet since using cams in 1998 was 9/6. i have a feeling this year will be the latest!

I am curious when I will see bucks out of velvet. They were consistently 2-4 weeks behind in development all summer long, curious if they just speed up in the end in a situation like that.

Most loose velvet right around Sept 1 give or take a few days in eastern iowa, the earliest rub I have seen was on Aug. 19th but I have not gotten photos that early ever...late August is the earliest I have seen there.

If you are interested here is pretty much the same topic but from 3 years ago in 2010.

Seemed like they held onto it late that year. Interesting to compare.

September 5th is usually the general time frame for me, give or take a week. Last year I have three bucks in velvet on the 5th and by the 11th they were all hard horned.

Labor Day weekend every season I start finding early rubs out of velvet. Last year I found all those cluster rubs on Sept2nd. Killed him as he exited his bed on Sept.15th.

I found some fresh rubs yesterday. Looks like velvet is starting to come off.

Saw a 150" plus buck out of velvet last night. This was in NW WI. One 1.5er that was with him had velvet hanging. Always cool to see the first hard horn of the year.
