Cutovers

Unread postby Widerack » Sat Aug 24, 2013 3:42 am

Again, I hunt in southern Louisiana. I'm new to the beast method but am bound and determined that it can work down here too but so far have been unsuccessful at finding any buck beds. Cutovers are a place I haven't ventured off to yet. Reason being is that they are thick, nasty, and near impossible to navigate through. Have any of you had experiences at finding bedding activity in cutovers. I watched Dan's Extreme Whitetail Tactics this week. Our cutovers are somewhat similar to those marshes just a little harder to navigate through. Any info is much appreciated!

Check out the down wind edges and the fingers / points, or high spots. If its relativity young growth check under lone big trees on the down wind side.

Widerack... Sorry I have not got back to you on your questions, just real busy with the bear hunt / baiting.

No worries Dan. Appreciate all the input. I need to come up with a game plan before I go into those cutovers.

Also look at the corners of the cutover for sign. Check the sides that have acorn trees an while you there. Check acorn trees for acorns. Look for rubs an old scrapes near logging roads. Then put together your information. That should give you some direction.

I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

I'm unlucky enough to live & hunt in S LA like Widerack. I made a short scouting trip this morning to a local WMA. I picked out a lone tree in a cutover right at the end of a point. The strip pines just N of the point had pretty decent feeding sign. But this is what I hit when I got to the edge of the cutover. In the 2nd pic the purple pin is the tree.

Thanks Cbigbear. That's pretty much the type cutover thickets I was referring to!
