Scouting in August
If you just got permission to hunt a new piece of ground, would it be a good idea to go probing around this close to season? Just wanted to see what some of you guys think and how you would go about it. If I recall in the article 12 questions to Andre he would go in 2 weeks before and jump everything on the property.

Re: Scouting in August
I'd scout it now, not ideal, but for me I like getting the lay of the land ahead of time.

Re: Scouting in August
Personally I would scout from a distance and run a few cameras in non protruding areas to see what's around. I don't like laying scent in areas without knowing them, I'd rather go scout from afield (at distance) and online looking at aerial and topos. I find what I like, go in, hang and hunt.

Re: Scouting in August
A more conservative approach would be to study your maps. Maybe be walk the edges of the property depending on the lay of the land and size of it ASAP, then let it rest. Once the season opens grab a mobile stand and scout ready to set up on hot sign. Of course you'll have your plan because of your map studying efforts. Good luck!!! Also shinning and well though trail cams could help on field edges....

Re: Scouting in August
I would say for me it would depend on how small of a property it is and how the hunting pressure is on surrounding properties. A friend of mine every yearhas bucks showing up on trail cams during the first week of bow season. As soon as he puts pressure on the bucks scoot out and stop bedding there during daytime. i know some of that might have to do with changing food sources too but his surrounding neighbors have good cover and dont bowhunt.

Re: Scouting in August
I would walk the property now... But stay out of the actual assumed bedding areas... As you mentioned, Andrae goes in and kicks everything up and tries to see it prior hunting the area... Works for him, but has failed for me a few times. Worked others. I personally would be a little more conservative.
1 good tactic would to be to scout just before a heavy rain.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll dive in tomorrow since we have rain in the forecast for this weekend. Might put up a camera too.

Re: Scouting in August
I would scout every inch of it now and hunt it later in the season. I would rather know than guess, that is if you have other areas you can hunt in the meantime.
This is what I am doing with several new areas I didn't have time to scout post season. Sure the deer will smell me in their now but it is almost 4 months away that I will be hunting it and hunting pressure between now and then and hopefully nobody else penetrating the areas I am going to scout deer will get stacked in there as usual...
