Shoot a velvet buck?

Unread postby UntouchableNess » Sun Jul 28, 2013 11:51 am

There is the "shoot a shed buck" thread, what about shooting a buck in velvet? He might not be done growing yet. You have to strip the velvet for an official "score" for the record books (I think). So do you shoot a buck before he is in hard antler, state season regulations allowing....

I almost killed a 7-8 year old buck that had velvet year round....The old guy had some kind of injury where he never shed velvet. I had several close calls but he was always smarter than me. I found him dead one year before season started; I was sad our cat and mouse game was over.

I'd shoot one in a heartbeat but it just doesn't happen down here very often.

I think there are special precautions for mounting a velvet rack: freeze drying or formaldehyde gassing. Just saying it might cost a little more and some Taxi's might not be equipped.

There are a few areas you can hunt velvet whitetails... N Dakota, Manitoba, Kentucky I think, and some Western states. I killed one in late August in Manitoba. Cost me extra to mount .. all the blood has to be sucked out with syringe and needle and a preserving agent injected back n.

A fella I know that went on a caribou hunt was given some syringes full of something by his taxi to inject into horns to help save them till he got them back..Just an FYI if you are after that bucket list velvet deer...
There are a good number of them in Southern Kentucky when season opens..
I'm not fond of velvet racks personally.

One of my serious goals this year. Last year I had two come by at 6 yards. Very good bucks for me. Both were too far for the bow. Going to be hunting the same type of setup this year but with the rifle.

Opener is August 15 so I figure I have from then til September 15th to get it done. Another incentive to shoot a buck at this time is that doe tags do not become active for use until the 15th.

Velvet doesn't trip my trigger.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Velvet is high on my list! I have a spike I shot years back that was in velvet but it was less than 3 inches so it counted as a doe. My taxidermist didn't charge extra to put it on a plaque bit she did have to inject it.
