How they hanging?
How do you hang your deer? Head up? Head down? Why do you prefer this way?

Re: How they hanging?
Head up for me, not sure why, this is just the way I ve always done it. If you are going to have it mounted and you hang it upside down, don't rinse it with water. A buddy of mine did that, and the neck swelled up with water and made it alot harder for the taxidermist to skin it.

Re: How they hanging?
Head up when hanging. . . Let that body cavity drain out.
Head down when skinning, I use a gambrel and find it's easier to peel the hide if you peel down the back legs and around the rump, then roll the hide in your hands and force down.

Head down always, especially if you're mounting the deer. If you hang it by the head you run the risk of stretching the cape.

Re: How they hanging?
good topic, dng- The hunters I am acquainted with consistently follow the tradition of their family, whether its heads up or down. Obviously there are advantages and problems with each.
My family has a picture of a Michigan Beast Buck taken by my great-grandfather in 1913 and the buck is hanging head side up. I hope to have a picture of a Michigan Beast buck hanging head side up in 2013.

Hang it by the back legs, head down. Same way the butcher does.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

The cavity should drain head down too if it's properly field dressed.

Maybe I'm assuming too much when I say that in the event you shoot a mounter, it would go without saying that you don't hang him by his neck... Not all hunters save one bullet or arrow a year for solely a 150 or bigger, and may also opt to harvest a couple does each season in the mean time.

That's how I do it too.

I disagree. The length of the neck is fixed and as long as the neck is not completely broken and detached internally, hanging by the neck or antlers won't stretch the cape. Even if it was able to stretch "longer and skinnier" in that position, the original neck circumference could and should still be made the original size for the mount.
The only real reason not to hang them by the neck is hair can get pulled out by a rope or chain.

Re: How they hanging?
I hang head down for a couple reasons. First is to not damage the cape and the other is that I want the blood to flow into my neck roast. Gut, rinse throughly, hang down. I process my own. Potato-patato. My parents taught me that. Didn't know if it was correct or not.

Re: How they hanging?
I also hang by the head until I skin and butcher. Then I hang by the back legs.
Another trick I use is, I clean the cavity with vinegar and water. Cleanliness is good.
