I'm interested in bucks the members have obtained with slugs and smoothbore shotguns. If I recall correctly Dan commando-crawled with a shotgun on his back to get a particular buck.
What other smoothbore/slug stories are out there?

Re: Stories Wanted: Bucks with Slugs and Smoothbore Shotguns
My mother used to hunt with a smooth bore 20 ga. back in the day. I remember from the few deer she killed with it, it was never a "one shot, one kill" type of gun. Always ended up tracking a long ways and having to lay another round into the wounded deer to put it down. She used Brenneke sabot slugs too. Not sure if it was the smooth bore's fault, or just resilience of the animal. maybe both??? She switched over to the lever action 30-30 and never had to track a deer since.

Re: Stories Wanted: Bucks with Slugs and Smoothbore Shotguns
I think it was the second buck my youngest son shot (Blizzardhunter). We were hunting a place we called "The Log". It was a downed tree that had rotted down to nothing but the trunk and rested right on the top of a ridge where it broke over toward the draw below. We sat behind it for several years, it was a good spot. When I started him hunting I bought him an 870, 12 guage pump for squirrels & such. Come deer season I fixed him up with a box of slugs.
This one particular year we were sitting there when a small buck came from the creek direction right up the draw and would have passed by right below us. When he was about 60-70 yards out he stopped and twisted his head around to scratch it with his hind hoof. That was when Jacob shot. The buck straightened up stiff legged and tipped over like you hit him with club. He never moved a muscle after straightening up or on the ground. When we walked down to him, we found that he hit him in the neck, came out the neck on the other side, and went in the shoulder. The next day we skinned him out and found that the slug once it entered the shoulder went all the way through his body and was laying just under the skin on one of the back rumps next to his but. He still has the slug to this day, I won't ever forget it.
Nothin beats a slug.

Re: Stories Wanted: Bucks with Slugs and Smoothbore Shotguns
I think it was the same year (as the story above), I took him (Blizzardhunter) after a doe. I always liked to get in the woods early. I wanted to be where I was goin when it broke daylight. The other people that hunted that farm always waited until it broke day before leaving the milkbarn headed to the woods. I also didn't want anyone to know where my spots were, that is until they heard the shot Cause they had a tendancy to move in on me. So, there we were, not sure exactly where we were gonna set up but wanted to be in a finger of woods that jutted out into a fescue field. The deer seemed to like crossing that field and come into the woods around that finger. The plan was to get into the finger and wait until we could see a bit and then set up on the ground. While we were standing there waitin on good light, we heard footsteps coming from behind us. A deer. It was light enough we could see in the field but not in the woods. After a few minutes wait, a doe stepped out into the field and stopped 20-25 yards from us. Jacob, being the hardcore hunter he was, had the 870 shouldered and ready to go. He shot and we both were blinded by the muzzle blast After the shot we stood there dazed and listened but didn't here the doe run off. All we could see was an orange dot and finally we seen some white on the ground where the doe had been. Sure enough there she laid, never moved a muscle. We almost made it back to the house before the sun came up. Later that day we were talkin to the other hunters on the farm and they said they were walkin across the field when they heard the shot I never understood why they waited so long before goin out.
One thing about slugs, the only way the deer go after bein hit by one is down. Jacob has killed a bunch of them with em.

Re: Stories Wanted: Bucks with Slugs and Smoothbore Shotguns
The first deer i ever killed was with a 12 gauge pump smoothbore. Had a nice 6 point buck run near me around 40 yards when I fired 2 shots at him. Hit him once in the rib cage. Sorry for the super long story.

Just had a buck mounted that I shot in 1983 with a Remington 870 vent rib modified choke smooth bore and Winchester foster style slugs. Brief story here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=18312
In 1991, first year we bought our farm, I was standing at the kitchen window sharpening knives early in the morning. It was during Iowa's first shotgun season, my shotgun was leaning against the wall next to the kitchen door. The farm we bought was in the CRP program and was 5-7 foot tall switch grass. Gazing out the window, a doe enters the back yard, acting weird and looking back over her shoulder. This put me on alert, as I figured something was following her. Sure enough, a buck comes out of the switch grass and I was headed out the door with shotgun in hand. I peered around the corner of the house, saw him at 50 yards and one shot later......

Re: Stories Wanted: Bucks with Slugs and Smoothbore Shotguns
Have shot a few with smoothbore slug but have switched out the barrel now, on my 870 to a rifled barrel for accuracy. I added another 40 or so solid yards to my kill range.
We are in a shotgun only zone here in sourthern michigan, the rifle zone is farther north.
Stories.......many with the smooth bore happen early in my hunting years....very early.
It was anything with antlers, and keep shootin until you see the buck go down type hunts. Lets just say I have learned a lot since those early days.
Youth hunting.....rain. Pouring rain with dark clouds. In a field ditch on the edge of a hayfield....waiting for the evening group of whitetails to make their way out across the field to eat. Getting very discouraged as it was the last day of the hunt.
A group of maybe 5 does and fawns made there way on the field about 80 or so yards out. And then the young 7 point buck stepped out. Game on. (just for reference, I think this was my second year hunting, remember this for the next part and please have mercy! Lol)
Gun up, sitting down but my knee was up for a rest. Aim.....squeeze the trigger.....WHAM!
startled all the deer, and they didnt know what to think. The buck just stood their looking around. Being the novice hunter, and a good chance buck fever had hit, I tried to settle down before the next shot.
WHAM! ok.....now the deer start movin, about a fast walk going away.
You gotta be kidding. Missed again!
Buck is somewhere around 100 yards now. WHAMMO!!!
MISSED A THIRD TIME!
I remember standing or shooting just above the sitting position. WHAM! shot number 4 on this buck. All the deer ran off now including him.
I was very disappointed. A young hunter does not know how to handle situations properly like this yet, and only time and experience can teach us.
Dad and I walked close to where the buck was standing last. No blood. I had seen the buck before dad did. Just in on the fencerow, maybe not more than 50 yards from where the last shot hit him.
Happy, excited....and soaked. It was awesome.
Dad and I later used the rangefinder on the shot. 119 yards. And unbelievably the slug, took the heart out of that running buck. Skill did not bring that buck down, something from heaven must have helped!
I dont buffalo on stories or tell tall tales, this really did happen.

Good story, don't doubt it a bit! Congrats.
Back in 1985 or 86, I headed down to Shimek State Forest during the week. Shotgun season opened on Saturday, I figured during the week, the pressure might be less. I found a tree that was somewhat climbable, shimmied up and tried to get comfy. Didn't have to wait long and saw a nice tall tined buck enter an opening. I raised the 870, put the bead on him and pulled the trigger.
At the shot, he buckled and flopped to the ground. He rolled around a bit and got up, took off running tripod fashion. Blood trail was huge at first, fast diminishing. I found a 5 inch section of front leg bone where he went down. Shot was low, took out the front leg. I did not recover him.

Re: Stories Wanted: Bucks with Slugs and Smoothbore Shotguns
I shot my only "big buck" with a smooth bore shotgun at 20 yards. It was the first deer I saw on opening morning- 9 am, and I noticed his rack as he shook it near a sapling. Turns out he was with a doe that nearly busted me and ruined the whole thing. I was very high up in my climber and the doe got to about 15 yards in front of me and noticed that something wasn't right. She was looking at me, doing the head circle, and threw in a couple foot stomps. I thought I was busted for sure because it was a stiff wind blowing directly to her. Thankfully she calmed down and moved beneath me to my left. While she was on alert the buck was behind a tree but I don't think he was paying any attention to what she was concerned with- he was just in love.
She eventually walked off to my left and behind me just enough to draw the buck out and I dropped him in his tracks at 20 yards. I had him within 25 yards for over 10 minutes and within 50 yards for almost 20 minutes before I could get a shot off. That was a stressful situation but it ended well. The buck had a net NT score of 180 4/8 and grossed right around 189.
