Cave bed...

Unread postby dan » Mon May 20, 2013 10:15 am

Ok... officially not a cave bed... But its cool anyway. The bed was underneath tree roots and the buck could only see one direction.

Abut 100 yards from that bed a rubline starts up, and the clients neighbor had pic's of a booner in daylight coming thru there from the beds direction. It was the only bed I found close enough to be the one that buck used.

That's pretty neat. A booner would have to be careful so that his horns don't get tangled up in the the roots overhead! It is interesting that a buck would limit its field of vision that much. It looks like he would be only able to see about 90 degrees out of 360. (Edit - maybe a bit more than that after looking at it but still less than 180 degrees anyway)

Good find! I have found a few of those in cedar swamps but never could really confirm if they were truly buck beds or not. They seem to be used more during the winter I'm thinking for thermal warmth to partially stay out of the wind kinda like when they bed in thick pines during a winter storm.

One root bed I found like that I know for sure was being used by a bear since it had coarse black hair in it.

My thoughts were if you played a just off wind you could sneak up on this bed pretty easily with him in it.

Nice set up on the bucks part.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
