wanna be"s
I recently ordered two outdoor channels on my cable. I find myself starting to regret it. I was watching a guy telling me how, all the hard work that he put in scouting , trail camming, watching the fields and patterning deer, were going to pay off. Then this same guy goes to a ranch and spends a few days watching bucks go by, a predetermined stand, set up by the ranch. Now he sees a good one he likes and shoots it and sure enough he goes to get the ranch hand to retrieve it. I didnt know they let you go to the ranches early to scout and pattern deer ??? Ive been doing it all wrong apparently !!!
Ok now on to rack size. If you shot a buck this year and the rack was above average for YOUR AREA , great Job ! I don't care if its a basket rack. If your a good hunter who is restricted to hunting, crazy pressured, shot up, deer herd and you succeeded in killing a better than average deer in your area, you are in my eyes a real hunter. If you go hunting on a paid ranch (not a lease, Im all for a lease) where a dozen bucks of legendary size parade by you and you selectively pick out and take a animal , you Sir or Mam are a want to be hunter. I don't mind that you like to ahem ,hunt that way, just don't compare your self to me. Hunting is not a 100 percent sure thing.

All the shows are lame. I don't watch any. Is Jimmy Houston still on any hunting shows? I remember seeing some youtube clip of that guy acting like a tough guy after shooting a big buck when the 12 foot high fence was visible a hundred yards away. Although, I used to enjoy his bass fishing shows when I was kid.

While I really do agree with most everything you say, you have to be careful of being close minded. Some people have too many other, more important obligations in their lives to put in the amount of hours scouting and failing during season to connect on an above average buck for the area they hunt, on heavily pressured land. They also may have the means to hunt a high dollar ranch.
Obviously the time, effort and skill required by the hunter in these two instances are on each end of the spectrum, but that is no reason to look down on someone else and to call him any less of a hunter. I get it that you don't need any pointers from someone who 'buys their deer hunts', but then again, he doesn't need any advice from you either, that's what he pays his guides for.
But I do agree, most hunting shows on cable are just awful.

I'd put my money on Dan .......but I would not discount the Drury's........remember, they were not always celebrities with large tracks of land............IMO they are fine hunters, it is just WAY easier to film a hunting show on unpressured farms, more/better footage etc...

I kind of agree, but a busy self employed businessman or executive might not have good bucks in there state and if they want to kill a good/great buck with limited time they are better off using an outfitter. Someday I would like to hunt Canada for whitetails and you can bet I will use an outfitter.............different strokes for different folks. I do agree that every "good" hunter should be able to scout, find good areas and select good kill trees to be the complete package. Take Bill Winke for instance: He grew up in NE Iowa, had NOTHING given to him (in terms of a large farm) and through hard work and determination created a nice living for himself in the hunting industry.

Jackson, I agree with outfitters, or leasing land. Im really talking about ranches that are just hollywood sets for videos, lol. If some of these guys were left to them selves to scout a good area, they would be lucky to bag a deer at all.

Palmetto kid, I don't look down upon them , I just don't like having them put on a pedestal or even considered an equal to a real hunter who is skillful at hunting. They are put out there as an expert hunter, knowledgeable. We are supposed to take advise from them and buy their product ? Im not gonna pat someone on the back and blow sunshine up their backside so they will feel like a hunter. I dont have money ,time or expertise to become a race car driver, tough crap for me. But I dont expect all the great race car drivers to pretend Im in their class just to pacify me and not hurt my feeling. lol.

Re: wanna be"s
When people look at all the huge racks these guys have they start getting unrealistic expectations of what constitutes a good hunter. Its so skewed that we even start to believe the B.S. Some of the best hunters I know have average racks, but consistently shoot good deer for their area. They will never have huge racks , but everyone knows they are above average hunters.

Winke is probably the one exception, he is still doing it the right way, he has eared his stripes. He has in my opinion from reading his recent articles lost touch with the average joe a bit. But he has to making a living and I respect that.

I agree... I don't care much for hunting TV the way it is presented... however, to each there own. I just don't watch it.
It does annoy me that kids watching these shows, or new hunters must really wonder what the heck they are doing wrong that bucks like that don't walk around in open field in front of them.

Re: wanna be"s
I think the shows do more victimizing than anything, they victimized me or years, had to have this bow, clothes, calls, hunt they way they said, if I had a problem, deal with it like they would. Wasted years I wish I cold have back.
