Re: off season mineral sites
I just use trace mineral. I want to peovide salt and inventory bucks on differwnt properties before the bucks break up. I see no need to buy a hunting mineral. There is no evidence to back manufacturers claims of growing bigger bucks.
I just place near bedding and water. I got some great pics last year.

Re: off season mineral sites
I just mixed up 250lbs worth, gonna be putting it out hopefully this week
Got the recipe off the net
1 part Di-Calcium
2 parts Trace Minerals (loose red stuff)
1 part Stock Salt
I also added 1 part dried molasses
and a few packs of Jello Mix to help them find it and get it going
I'm not convinced it grows bigger racks but if you want to take an inventory of deer it will definately put them in front of your cams

Re: off season mineral sites
I have been using trophy rock, it seems to last a good amount of time and I get great pictures of all the bucks in my area during the summer. I have also used deer cocaine the kind u mix in a 5 gallon bucket, I dump on logs or stumps and they seem to like it. I don't do it so much for growing better deer, but more as a deer inventory tool. I only use these on the private parcels I have permission to hunt, and its legal here in Michigan.

Mineral blocks on stumps, combined with a cheat jar of peanut butter attached to a tree. Works great

Re: off season mineral sites
My whole goal is inventory. I'm wanting to put a couple way off the food plots in some hardwood areas I want to set up for this coming bow season. I have some work to do in these areas, i'm hoping by providing them a treat the work i have to do wont spook them too bad.

How did it cost you to make 250 lbs? and how much are you putting out in a spot or at one time?

I have had a salt lick out for about ten years. I am going to freshen it up in about a month or so. Waiting to see if it floods any in the river bottoms. They are good for inventory.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

I used bag salt mixed with Di-Cal and some kind of topper, molasses mostly. Works great for inventorying deer. I'd start them in May and put a couple cameras over them. Leave them alone until late August / early September. It's fun to watch the antlers grow, but it's alot of pics to go thru come fall. The most I got was 5500 on 1 camera.
I've also done it in the winter, from Mid January until spring green up. Bucks that disappeared in Sept / October will come back. It lets you see what make it thru season and what didn't. Great off season hobby.
