EHD + Long Rough Winter

Unread postby westmibow » Sat Mar 30, 2013 12:05 am

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on what the EHD outbreak + this years winter will do to the deer populations. I know that a lot of States have been dealing with a pretty rough winter with deep snow and pretty cold temps. So do you think we will be looking at a pretty big hit on many populations? If so what type of recovery time is needed?

Here in Southeastern Wisconsin, we got nailed pretty hard! Worn Valley hunt club apparently found 80+ EHD victims, and something like 40+ came out of a WDNR chunk of land I can't publicly advertise right near my house. The neighbor farmer to one section of land I hunt found 13, and the neighbor to his direct east found three, including one booner. I called on a 10 acre parcel for sale right near by and he told me the neighbor to the north found 3 booners!! They have lots of land, but not nearly enough given the pressure from hunting, to cater to three booners... BUT, it's what he said. Just go to a tavern with a camo hat on and find yourself in conversation with local bowhunters in the area, listen to their stories and 90% of them will bring up EHD and the devastating effects it's had on the local herd. You'll hear about 5 here, 10 there, 40 over by so and so's, and 100+ at the such and such property. Then, just when you think their bluffing, phones start coming out with picture evidence of bucks with half velvet dead and left to rot along the edge of a creek, pond or river. Interesting only the crows will eat these things, too.. The yotes were leaving them alone!
