Re: Barry Wensel Whitetail Bootcamps
I'm going to it in a week. I have corresponded with uncle Barry for a number of years and even spent a week hog hunting with him one time. He's as good as they come and he and his brother Gene have been an inspiration to me since I knew of them. I booked my first Africa hunt through Gene Wensel when I was too broke to afford it and he coached me through it. It took years but with his help I did it. Still too broke to afford it now but it was life changing and I'm glad I did it! I'll let ya know how the bootcamp goes but I may be a little bias. HA!

I went up and met Barry back in 07. Great time! It was an honor to meet Gene and Barry both; If you're lucky they will take you over to Gene's house to see "Woody."
Have fun

Re: Barry Wensel Whitetail Bootcamps
Barry and Gene are good people. I've talked with both a couple times but I'm not as fortunate as my dad who could've went on a moose or bear hunt with them In Alaska about 25 years ago. Along time ago my dad got to know Barry a bit more. My dad still Is mad he turned down a hunt to hunt with him and some other well known bowhunters.

Sounds pretty good!
I had considered hunt w/ the Deer & Deer hunting crew if I had the money (something like $3-3,500).
It was a bow hunt / midday conference in either MO or KY I forget...
When I hit the lotto maybe!

Yeah, I really did learn a lot of things. If anything, it let me know I was already on the right path to success. The camp didn't do anything revolutionary, but it allowed me to fine tune a lot of my setups and look at things in a different perspective. Kinda make sense?? He gives you a ton of info in a short amount of time so be prepared to take some notes; I actually brought a camcorder to film a lot of the setups we went to. It was nice to go back and see the footage and audio of our scouting trips.
I guess my only con for the camp was the lack of topographical maps/aerials of the land we visited. We visited a lot of places and it was hard to keep track of all of the areas and what was unique about each spot. Barry hunts a lot of funnels, edges, etc and its hard to grasp the funneling effect without seeing the bigger picture. He goes into great detail explaining the setups, but it would have really helped to see a nice aerial and topo. Let's face it, that is how we learn and break down our hunting locations. He might have changed this since i was there...A lot of people recommended that change so he might give out maps now.
His camp is a great learning experience to pick the brain of a legendary bowhunter; that in itself is worth the trip and something you can't find in any magazine or book!!
