Who hunts with 20 gauge slugs?

Unread postby Clevinger » Thu Mar 14, 2013 10:12 am

I am considering getting a 20 gauge slug gun to hunt in Iowa at a relative's farm. I have a rifle for deer and a smooth bore shotgun, but I'd like to get a rifled slug gun.

Thoughts on 20 gauge slugs for deer?

I have my eye on one of these:

20 is flat shooting and essentially shoots a 50cal muzzleloader bullet. I still prefer a 12 if brush is thick because the 20 will deflect easier

The little shotgun hunting I have done has all been with a 20 gauge. 12 gauge is way more gun than you need for any deer unless like Grud says you are mowing down brush with it. You can get second shots off far faster and more accurately with a 20 - heck of a lot less kick!

Ive been using a 20 gauge.. remington 870 for 13yrs. I love it. Ive made some long kills with it 80yrds with the iron. I did however miss a nice buck @ 30yrds last year because of deflection off a 1" branch. As for the kick....I hear it has more kick than a 12 gauge because of the weight, not sure if there is much truth to that because I dont own a 12 gauge.

A 12 ga slug is a very powerful load. I see nothing wrong with a 20 slug gun for deer. The sabots I shoot out of my 12 gauges, I got a few different ones, are 50 cal. I think the 20s are a bit smaller. Some of the singles (like the H&R), or bolts (like the savage) I hear are tack drivers.

I have been researching the H&R as well as the Savage. Both are great guns, but from what I have heard and seen the Savage has greater accuracy potential than the H&R.
I use a 20 for deer and always have. Plenty of gun for the job.

I have been using a slug gun for about 25 years. I have a number of them including two 12 gauge Ithaca Deer Slayers, a 12 gauge Browning Gold with a rifled barrel and a H & R single shot with a rifled barrel, and with out a doubt my favorite slug gun is the 20 gauge Savage bolt action slug gun I bought for my son. This gun is a tack driver even at long distances and I havent used any of my own slug guns for 2 years since I bought it for him.

I have the savage 220 and it is very accurate - a great deer gun. Should be good to about 150 or more, but never shot it over 100. I don't think the recoil is much different than a 12 gauge.

Same set up as me...bull barrel tack driver.

Me and moog got to the range with the two best stock slug tossers (220 and the H&R). I don't believe a word about people saying one is more accurate than the other, because it is a coin toss.

As much as I love my 220, for the price difference, the HR is a better buy. I was impressed with Phade's. Only difference (besides weight and asthetics) is single shot vs. bolt action 3 shot.

I dont think there is a less expensive gun than an H&R... I think I paid $275 for mine brane new 3 years ago!

That Ithaca is a great gun.
20 ga or 12 ga or even a 16 ga it's all good, heck a .410 out to 60-70 yards has killed a lot of deer too...!

I sold my TC 20ga slug barrel to get this.
It was a great decision as I could not find a load to repeat in my TC, tried something like 5 or six and gave up.

I have had my 220f savage for two years and I love it. Couldn't ask for a better slug gun.
