I had initially heard the Savage 220s were awesome, but then I heard and read that many of them have feeding problems, particularly if you put more than 1 round in the magazine. It kind of made me hesitate on them. I was close to getting one previously.

Re: Who hunts with 20 gauge slugs?
Ive decided to buy my son a 20g semi auto for his first gun. I have seen my sister and brother use a 20g on deer with awesome results. Modern day slugs are awesome! If your looking for slug gun only, hard to beat the H&R slugger. I want a dual purpose gun for my son, so Im looking at the rem 11-87

I have the 220. On a bench and shooting at 100 yds I get 2.5 inch groups. I use 3 inch Federal Barnes and the recoil is tolerable. I don't have feed issues but you have to work the bolt with confidence.

all nice guns Ken. I have a youngin also and decided all of his 1st guns with not be semi auto to keep it more safe. he has a bolt action .22, and a pump shotgun.

Re: Who hunts with 20 gauge slugs?
Some things to consider:
Recoil: A semi auto 12 gauge with 2 3/4" slugs will recoil equivalent to a 20 gauge with 3" slugs out of the 220. Ive shot both side by side.
Price: My mossberg 935 will run you around the mid 500's the same for the 220. The mossberg will hold 5 the 220 will hold 3.
Accuracy/knock down: I have seen the 220 and the mossberg 935 shot side by side. Federal ammo out of the 220 and lightfield ammo out of the 935. Accuracy is the identical. Knockdown I have to give the advantage to the 12
I love my mossberg 935 autoloader with a rifled barrel. I shot 6 deer with that gun this season alone and not a single one of them made it out of sight of the tree they were shot from. I contribute a lot of that to the ammo, but as far as accuracy and shootability the 12 guage autoloaders take the cake.
