Who has hunted Iowa and killed a 170 inch, gross buck?
Just trying to find out who has killed a (170 inch gross) (or not) that hunts Iowa. This includes residents, NR any weapon.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Dont mean to highjack your thread Stan....but Im curious to the same question about Wisconsin or any state at all. Gross boone is hard to come by especially as a typical.
Interesting to see what people vote.

Re: Who has hunted Iowa and killed a 170 inch, gross buck?
I have hunted Iowa several times and have not tagged a 170 gross or above buck. I did see and shoot one that surly would of made it in S.W. Iowa, but it was not recovered, and was the exception. Most of the mature bucks I seen in the areas I hunted in Iowa would of scored from 140 to 160 with 150 being the norm.
With that said, I have shot 2 bucks in Wisconsin that score over 170 gross, and a bunch in the 160's... The 170 mark is tough to topple anywhere...
There is a big difference between hunting 170+ bucks, and 125+ bucks... The best places to go after each are not always the best for both...
I am sure there are pockets of great genetics in Iowa though, and lumping the whole state into booners being hard to come by per adult animal probably ain't fair.
Genetics, soil, and nutrition can change dramatically just by moving a few miles.

Hunted Iowa once. Wounded a 140 class. My son had two encounters with a 170 but didn't get a shot.

I would be interested in Wisconsin and other states as well. I just did this poll because everyone seems to want to hunt Iowa and Iowa has the most expensive license fees of any state. Just my curiosity.

Re: Who has hunted Iowa and killed a 170 inch, gross buck?
Stan I havent hunted Iowa yet, applying for points this year. Shooting a 170"+ is not why Im excited to go there. I want a legit shot at a 140"+ buck and from what I hear Iowa is the best shot at that. Iowa grows some big bucks no doubt, but my desire is to see lots of good ones, not one great one. I hunt Kansas, land of the giants. I have yet to see a giant while hunting, saw one from the car once. Kansas is going down hill, they offer so many NR permits they have left overs now.

Hunted Iowa twice in the 90's.
missed a shot at one close to 170. I'd like to think he would have made it. Great action just not a lot of booners.

Hunted Iowa once, saw a ton of bucks, shot a 140 class. Never saw anything close to B7C while there. I have killed one gross 170 in Michigan and one gross 167 in Michigan

Re: Who has hunted Iowa and killed a 170 inch, gross buck?
I've hunted Iowa since 1974 and the largest gross buck to date was Oct 12, 2012 @161".
During archery season 2007, I missed a typical buck I'm guessing would have been easily over 170, probably pushing 200. Hadn't seen him before the encounter and never saw him after.
In 2010(?), I got a great show from a 170+ buck. He was rubbing his rack on a grape vine, got it tangled up in his rack. Instead of freaking out and exploding, he remained pretty calm as he moved his head to get untangled. He then bedded down 40 yards from me for a half hour. I only had a doe tag in my pocket.
Gun season back in the '90's, I passed a poor shot opportunity (too much brush) on a buck that another guy in our party shot, scored 183".
Against what most people have been lead to believe, this class of deer is rare to most parts of Iowa.

My interest in Iowa stems from having spent time in NE Iowa and I love the Hills there and I'm still young enough to hunt it but probably won't draw to hunt it all that many times while I still can. Also I have a buddy that lives there and has been begging me to come visit him and I have an open invitation to hunt his land, but I'm hunting the public. Finally it's only 4 hours from me. Even though I'm an IL resident, west central is further.
