Yeah a dumb fawn running around during gun season is a easy kill for someone!

Actually, I believe that if a buck fawn is orphaned early he can learn a little bit about hiding and avoiding danger... But if mom is around she will kick him out about 2 weeks before gun season and he will be wandering around stupid during gun season anyway... And fawn does seem to just join another doe group.
The timing of Wisconsins gun season in my opinion is a huge factor in why the percentage of antlerless deer shot for earn-a-buck is nearly 50% buck fawns. Every buck fawn that just got kicked out by the doe is wandering around the woods trying to find his own bedding areas in new territory, trying to find new food sources, and feeling scared and rejected.
Then fill the woods up with trigger happy weekend warriors and tell them they have to shoot an antlerless deer before shooting a buck...

Right on, Dan.

I have cold blood when need be, but this pair I was watching while I was in Eagle River this past week had me questioning this very topic. . .

I will add that no matter my predatory instincts, I do lose some sleep thinking about a "bahh-ing" baby looking for his/her fallen mommy, whom I'm gutting at that same instant. . . That hits me right in the gut and turns me a little green.

I'd post a picture but there's an error message that reads, SORRY, THE BOARD ATTACHMENT QUOTA HAS BEEN REACHED ??

Brit is working on that... For now you can post pics with Photo-bucket.
Or email the pic to me bukmastrwi@aol.com with a link to the post where you want it.

I have also shot does with fawns. And honestly, it doesn't bother me much until the fawns start bleating. I have to believe that most of us hunters would feel just a little uneasy about it. But I don't regret it.

That's the gut clincher. . . I hate it when the fawns start bleating.

About five years ago I shot a doe with a fawn and it would not leave her and was bleating so it really bothered me. :(
I guess the only way to explain it is that I totally felt no satisfaction taking that doe under those circumstances. I guess in my younger years I might have felt different but after that I told myself never again until later in the season.
Since then I have passed on many does with fawns and just really enjoyed watching the doe interact with her fawns and teach them survival.
I guess as I get older I enjoy watching things like that rather than just killing any deer that passes by me. With no EAB I would rather not kill any antlerless deer anyway so the deer population can rebound and just focus on hunting mature bucks.

Could not have said it better myself, Dewey... My thoughts exactly! It's a good feeling watching does walk by interacting with their fawns now-a-days. I watch them and think back on how I used to let fly. You're right, with age comes that softer spot in these instances and I think it's a rewarding new frame of mind for myself when I take to the stand. Well said.
