Cool thread wish I could still view all the pics. A lot of non lesser bucks posted in my opinion.
A lot of deer people around here would be on a 3 day bender in celebration after killing
In recent yrs I shot this 7 pt. I had read or listened to some things on tracking deer in snow. I had only tried it maybe twice before and it was very casual or half hearted short walk type thing. This time there was a NE wind and a heavy snow coming down. The old guy was up visiting for thanksgiving and I had one good easy spot where he could sit in a NE wind. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. He was insisting I go hunt and he would just hang out. He laughed at me when I told him I was going to go see if I could cut a track around this bedding area 1 mile away. I had only cyberscouted this area for the most part.
I parked about 1 mile south of where I really anticipated the sign and worked my way through the woods/swamp north. It was very windy, snowy, and big loads of snow crashed off the spruce brows left and right. The type of day most people sit by the fire but being out in The elements doing what you love just makes the testosterone flow. You feel like a man maybe even a beast.
I worked my way north and cut a few sets of tracks, all for I presumed maybe a small buck. Almost 3/4 mile in and 3/4 way to my presumed bedding area I stopped and sat on a log. Pulled off my wool socks and stuffed em in my pocket because I was beginning to sweat too much. I got up and walked maybe 30 yds and in all the snow crashing I heard one that sounded different. Deer! I peeled the neoprene sock off my scope and had it to my eye
Lickity split. This was terrain where a clear shot wasn’t likely passed 40 yds. I picked out his rack through a hole in the timber, I followed and the next hole he hit I let one fly. He went down. It wasn’t a very good shot as I likely hit some brush so I ran up to clear view and pumped another one in him.
When I walked up close I realized this was a buck I would have passed from my tree. He was smaller than any I’ve shot since probably 2005 but I was still happy and excited.
The hunt offered a new thrill, something I hadn’t experienced before. I sat with my hand on that deer for a while and just took it all in. The old guy wouldn’t believe it. Beginners luck probably.. at any rate ‘‘twas a great day
Then I had to get him out! Lucky I had just got on x so I marked em and headed due west toward the road. What would you know I hit a logging trail 150 yds away. So instead of returning for my pack And knife I returned for my quad.
