Public land watercraft question
Yes.. I am a new dude... although I know many of you already.
I have a question I was hoping to get an answer for.
I'm onto a really nice buck (from what I believe based on sign observation) that I recently came across on some public ground.
The only good entrance would be by water.. so here's the Q..
Does anyone know of or use a smaller watercraft.. like say less than 6-7 feet in length. I have a 5 foot bed in my truck and don't really want to buy a trailer and a boat.. just the boat. Keep in mind I'd have to carry my stand and bow in as well. I've looked at kayaks.. but can't seem to find one with enough extra room.
Any suggestions gents?

You should be able to find a 11-12' kayak with a flat bottom and flat front and rear platforms. They are rock solid and I've floated a lock on, my Lone wolf and a 15 ft ladder stand out on mine this spring. I believe it's from the Pelican brand. There are so many varieties you should be able to find exactly what you need. Or buy cheap and customize it to fit your needs.

Depends on water type...Is it a creek, major river, reservoir, etc??

It's a "creek" off of a major river.. maybe 60 yards wide... water moving at a steady pace.. but not overly fast.

I'm looking for more 6-7 foot.. if such a thing exists.

Look up some of my threads on Zodiaks. They can do a lot and are very portable....Sorry, I just have to post this pic one more time.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Dan, it looks like you have about what I am looking for... what's the length of that kayak?
I see you have your stand attached.. but what of your bow? Do you just lay it across your lap?
Thanks ahead of time.

I think its an 8 foot... I attach the bow by bungee-ing it to the side of the stand and sticks...

Re: Public land watercraft question
I've found some really awesome spots to use a canoe or a kayak in but what do you guys think about alligators?
This one public spot produces some monsters every year but there is also an exploded population of gators. There are plenty of pics of these gators taking down some adult deer as well.
Am I being a wimp or is it a bad idea to try an canoe a bloody deer 1/2 miles out of there?

Eight foot is doable.. as long as you believe it's sturdy enough as I really don't feel like falling in the drink at 4 in the morning.
Thanks again for the pics.. they give me ideas.

Thanks for the welcome Ed.. I know your name too.. seen you around many times before.
I hope to enjoy some good deer conversations here.. I've hunted "beast" style before I ever knew what it was called.. I just thought it was common sense. Dan (and some others I know and know of) have made a science out of it.. I can remember talking to Dan about it years ago at the Wisconsin Deer Classic.. back in the day when Andrae still owned Lone Wolf and he worked the shows some.
Although since beginning my family I don't get on forums much anymore.. I still like to read a good thread on older age classes of deer.
