Late season doe

Unread postby Chris Conroy » Mon Dec 31, 2012 12:06 pm

Went to the local Marsh today to try to get something going with a spot and stalk since I had the whole place to myself. I tried a number of places that held deer before gun season, thinking they would be moving back to the thick cover. Needless to say I didn't even see tracks in those areas. Walking back further on the main trail, I noticed movement in the cattails and dogwoods right next to the dike. Bedded not 10 yds off the path were 7 does. I have all of my tags so I decided to take one for meat. Besides, this is an easy drag when they're right off the trail. After shooting one, I walked into the strip of cover to see the deer. I couldn't believe the number of beds and stripped branches. It looked like they are eating the bark off the dogwoods. After gutting the doe I checked her stomach and sure enough it was brown grass, buds, and bark. Not a whole lot of food out there I guess. I'll have to remember this spot next winter. The bird hunters walk by this spot numerous times to get to the fields, and the deer can just sit and watch from all that cover. I thought they'd be deep in the Marsh now.

I've seen them right up by the road instead of deep in the marsh many times during late season. Here, they often bed on the outskirts of public so they're closer to the cut corn fields across the road. Not much pressure I guess.

Awesome man!

I just got back this morning, I got on 2 does at 300 yds, cut them off at a pond and set-up. I grunted one of the does in she came in at 35 yards.....and I blew it. I shot right under neath her. And to add salt to the wounds, I lost my arrow. I suck.
