Half Rack, do you shoot?

Unread postby BackWoodsHunter » Fri Dec 21, 2012 4:48 pm

I'm not a huge fan but I've got to ask since the majority of the hardcore guys here are hunting for mature bucks what if you get onto a buck, or THE buck you have been after for while/scouted, and he comes in either with half his rack busted off or its late in the season and he already dropped half. Do you still shoot because you have outsmarted this old buck or does he get the pass til next season?

I think it would depend on how long ive been chasin that particular buck, my experiences with him, his age, etc... Newer bucks I would pass but I honestly think if ive been after a certain buck for a couple years and I had the chance id take him. I hunt for the experience and memories.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Definitely pass. I would let him go and hope I get a chance to kill him next season when he will be older and hopefully bigger.

If he shed only one antler I would kill him and take the chance that I find his shed. If I didnt find the shed....tough luck, I got a mature buck that I was after.

I would pass also. Just through respect for the animal, if he was in his prime it would be the opposite.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

It depends on the deer and the history so I can't say for sure until I am in that situation, I am probably a 50/50.

honestly it is hard to say. outsmarting an old deer is tough as it is. I could let him go for next year, but there are many things ahead of that deer that might kill him before next year gets here - winter, predators, cars. it's a gamble.

I thought hard about this same thing. Personally, I'd be willing to risk it kind of like a risk versus reward thing for me. If he's made it past 3.5 years, I'll roll the dice with next year....especially if I have history with him.
