If he has shed one side definite pass. If he is busted up it would depend on how bad, but most likely pass.

shed maybe? Broken off no. If I knew the pattern of the buck and I had found past sheds I'd consider shooting him in hopes of finding the other side of his rack. If I did not feel like I may have a chance at find the other side I would not shoot him, unless of course you are hunting for meat.

ive went back and forth at times with this question, BUT where i sit right now and how this season is going, im after one buck and ive put so much time in hunting him this year and had my opportunity and blew it. that hurt but if he comes by with one antler at this point im not settling now im in it for the long haul even if it means waiting till next year. half a monster wont do with all the time and work ive put into it i want the whole thing or nothing.

Thats a hard question to answer, too many variables for me.

I most likely would give him a pass in hopes of getting a shot at him with both antlers.

I passed on a buck 4 years ago that would have easily been my biggest buck if he would have had both sides.
Lost permission to hunt that farm the following spring. Owner's nephew moved back into town and wanted to hunt there.

Taking a buck that is mature in age is a great feat. Many guys are score hunters, imo taking a mature buck 3.5 years or older, half rack or not, isn't a slam dunk. Many things can alter this type of discussion. Can you keep him on the property you hunt, main roads, coyotes, poachers, food sources, other hunters, etc. I hunt state land only so this is a no brainer, he gets smoked if he comes by me. But other hunter's with other factors that may favor them might pass. I will admit i was a bit surprised to see so many guys that would pass such a deer. Not trying to ruffle anyone's feather's but I thought most were after mature deer, the score was a bonus. I've known deer that have grown one side all there life, and IMO was a great trophy. It's not as eye appealing, but I think it's part of the experience.

I have passed a half rack shooter in the past. Depends on the situation for me. I would have a hard time taking a half rack, but I would never say that I will never shoot one either.

It depends...on how much time I would be able to hunt in the remainder of the season, and how full my freezer was. I hunt for meat also, not just antlers.

3.5 year old and older bucks are so rare in my area. It would really depend. If my freezer was full and I have had an otherwise good season I would not shoot. If not I probably would.
