Sit or stalk with deep snow....

Unread postby Bucky » Fri Dec 21, 2012 2:15 am

I might venture out Monday. I know from past experience when shed hunting if there is deeper snow bedded deer let you get pretty close before they get up... I'm thinking about covering ground on Monday AM :?:

I would find.the food source and sit between bedding and food. I think you would have a better chance. With the snow and the cold temps coming its gonna be hard to sneak and they will also likely see you before you see them.

Oh that changes alot! Lol. If you have confidence in yourself being sneaky go for it! I couldnt pull it off. Depending on how thick the area to get a clear shot would be a factor also. I would still probably sit but thats my opinion.

This time of year deer are normally stacked up. Stalking is so hard because there very well could be 25 - 35+ deer yarded up in a bedding/holding area. This time of year when the deer are yarded up I like your chances better set up on a food source. As always, the 2 most important ingredients are where they are bedding/yarded and where they are feeding. A friend of mine killed a good buck last night on a food source. 35 deer came to the rye field he was set up on, the buck he killed was the 35th deer out. The deer were holed up about 250 yards from the source. 100 yard shot with a muzzle loader. Whites are a must if your going to move around in snow.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I would stalk if it was snowing or blowing and sit if it was calm.

I would go do some stalking if you can do it quietly. We sit all year long sitting in tree stands or ground blinds waiting for them to come to us, it will be a good change of pace for you Bucky! You could always tunnel under the snow to that bedding area you filmed earlier this year
