Ideas for covering tracks

Unread postby Czabs » Fri Dec 21, 2012 1:35 am

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on covering your tracks in the snow to your stand so no one knows where you were or so they dont follow you on. Been thinking all morning and all I got so far is jumping as far as possible out of your truck in the beginning or taking an unfrozen creek or river in. Lets hear your ideas/tips.

ditches, creeks, and riverbanks are the best to enter. It's not flat land and you can go 15-20 feet and have tracks out of view.

I deal with this a ton...half of the stands stolen, were stolen that way (day after hunting a spot, losing the stand to those who followed tracks).

The other thing is walking a long way, as people may abandon a trail if they think it is just a nature hiker, etc. Snow shoes may throw people off, too.

Walk in off the road in thick brush or slahings pulling the snow off the brush/limbs behind you as you move forward.

Park your truck in different spots and walk down/up the road couple hundred yards before diving in the brush.

A big no no is parking your truck in the same spot more than once and walking in near the parking area.

Thats what my buddy just told me. I think some people though will follow tracks facing either way just because they are there lol.

The doe I shot last year late season, I had tracks going in and drag marks coming back out lol. I was thinking there's nothing stopping someone from following that drag right back to the gut pile, so I picked the deer up and carried it the last 1/2 mile or so. Would've been tough with a big deer. I think covering tracks in most areas might be more trouble than its worth in some places. I just try to act like every other hunter/hiker when I'm on the main trail, but then try to cover up the spots that I deviate off of that main trail. If you're just going in at random places I guess the best thing is to just stay mobile and don't enter at the same spot twice.

Covering tracks in the snow is a tough one. Last night I hunted one of my good spots because I knew todays blizzard would erase all sign that I was ever there. Most spots I go in pretty deep so the average person will give up on following my tracks long before they get to my spots. If the snow is really deep I use snowshoes.

Park somewhere near the road and then walk on the road a ways until you find a spot to go in where your tracks cant be seen easily from the road. Doesnt cover your tracks but sure makes it tougher for them to figure you out. I guess this is pretty much what Hodag said.

Just yesterday I told Hodag that I sometimes walk in backwards so if the deer see my tracks they will think I left. I don't think he believed me.

Yea, use waterways, heavy deer trails (your tracks will hopefully not last longer than the next group of does coming thru and I am not too worried about scent in snow) and any kind of thick brush or hard to travel terrain and don't just keep walking in at one location. Most people that will follow you to find a stand are lazy. Take the l-o-n-g way to your stand, walk down the road a long ways and jump in the woods at a location no one will think of to look for tracks, like a deep ditch or something.

This isn't a tip for losing your tracks, but anyone checking their trail cams with snow on the ground, make sure you pull them because it makes easy pickings for thief's!
