Any idea how Andrae's season turned out so far? Has he killed any Bucks?

Talked to him a couple days ago... He shot a 164 inch 2 1/2 old he thought was much bigger because of the tiny body. He was a little upset with himself for shooting it, cause he felt it had potential to grow really big... He is hunting hard every day, and is on to some big stuff. Would not doubt it one bit if I get a call one of these evenings or a text with a pic... Cody shot a monster down in Illinois but did not recover it. Another hunter ended up shooting it a few days later.

How does he know it was only a 2 1/2?

Did he look at the teeth at all?

150 pound short snouted small buck. Its easy to tell 2 year olds... If you recall, the early season buck I shot was only a 2 year old also.
Most guys just look at rack and throw an age on them, Seems every body that shoots a 110 to 150 inch buck calls it 3 years old, 150 on up is always 4... but weight is much more reliable, especially with 1 and 2 year olds. Looking at the teeth, in my opinion is less reliable than weight, cross sectioning a tooth is the only absolute positive age determination.

I look at the hove wear as well. The older bucks have huge feet (for the most part) and have really rounded hoof tips. Usually the inner tip is significantly shorter than the outer tip. I think this is from a culmination of excessive travel and scraping during the ruts as they age. The front feet usually show more wear as well.

It is hard to put a 150 lb buck at anything other than a 2 1/2, though.

Good post and agree 100% with a small percentage being up for debate based on your weight comment...
I do realize you didn't hang your hat on that comment and agree the averages would makes this believable.

It's certainly different around the country based for animal size along with available food/nutrition, genetics, time of year, etc...
But I have killed short stalky deer with same chest size as a two hundred pounder but only weighed 142 pounds - literly 1 foot shorter in length. :o

Was he a good 2.5 and exceptional 1.5 or a bad 3.5, maybe an 8.5 that on his way out...?

I'm 5'5" what's my problem... Genetics (However - I have a great personality ;) )

DAN - How about a pic if Andrae's game?
Sounds like a great deer too me and can't get enough kill zone pics - aye!
Maybe throw it in the 500 club if it's too public elsewhere...

I'm lucky, most of the bigwoods two year olds don't even crack 90 inches, pretty easy to let them walk. Although I do know of a 140 two year old that got shot a few years back so it can happen, just far more rare in the northwoods.
