Iowa Pref Points
I am going to start applying for points in Iowa and can't find any info on when you can start applying. Anyone know? I will be hunting on public and haven't picked a zone yet either. Any zones better than others for public hunting? Thanks.

I believe the application period runs for one month, approximately May to June.

That is correct. I have been applying for a number of years now. You can now buy a preference point per year for $50. 3 points which is what I have now will ensure you draw for any unit within the state. In some cases I have seen in the published results hunters going to 4 points, but this is an exception.
You really need to start doing your homework. The first step is in deciding which zone you are going to apply for. The short answer is that yes there are better zones than others but you really need to do the homework for yourself to decide what "better" means. I highly suggest ordering a Iowa Sportsman's Atlast (http://www.sportsmanatlas.com/) Start reviewing the public land in there and cross referencing that with the DNR information and aerial photography.
You may be able to narrow down the zones you want to hunt by looking at the published Log Book information the DNR compiles each year. http://www.iowadnr.gov/Portals/idnr/upl ... ogbook.pdf It will not tell you where to kill a trophy buck, but I bet you can draw some conclusions from it.
Finally ask around! Through various conversations I was able to secure a few private farms from relatives I work with. My findings have been that people in Iowa are more friendly and access comes a little easier than in some states like Wisconsin, your mileage may vary.

They will keep gouging until people quit paying. Until that happens they will keep pricing way up there. It must be worth it, as people still wait in line to get drawn.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
