Pretty cool story about a little buck

Unread postby hunter_mike » Sat Dec 01, 2012 5:52 pm

Well the story begins with a guy I work with asking me about hunting. He is brand new to hunting and said that him and his brother had always wanted to hunt but their parents were not hunters. He said that he wanted to start hunting so that he could get his two young boys into it when they got old enough. Well about a week before the gun season opened this year he started asking me all kinds of questions about hunting, such as where I hunt, how I go about hunting and what not. I asked him if he wanted to go shining with me out by the public ground i have been hunting and that we did. We saw a few deer and I showed him a couple parking spots. I told him if he wanted to meet up I'd be happy to show him and his brother around.

We stayed in touch during the start of gun season, and the second day of gun season I met up with these guys. They had been sitting out all opening day and that morning without seeing a single deer. I could tell by the look of them that they were pretty restless so I decided we could make a couple short 3-man pushes. The first short drive we made was a dud but I put his brother in my LW Assault and I could he was getting jacked up, being his first time in a tree stand.

The second drive proved to be much more productive. I set up the LW at a narrow pinch point of a cattail basin with plowed cornfield on either hill surrounding it. The piece we drove out was a narrow strip of popple, scrub brush and cattail. We saw a lot of tracks while driving that out and sure enough when we got within about 200 yards of the stand I watched him raise up his gun and fire a shot. We were all pumped up to say the least, and I was even more jacked when I asked him what he got and he yelled "A little Buck!!!" Apparently we pushed about 5 deer past him and the buck was the last deer to come out.

I have to give credit to Dan and his videos. There were a lot of orange guys out there that day and years past I would have easily overlooked this terrain. All the hunters were up in the high and dry timber while we had fun in the swamp!

I was so happy after this hunt because I can tell I had a helping part in getting some new hunters into the sport. The guy who shot the buck is a marine and the guy I work with has two boys that he wants to get into hunting. They thanked me and told me that they didn't think they were ever going to see a deer until I showed up. I think this was one of the most fun hunts I have ever been on.Image

Awesome, heck of a nice thing you did taking him out. How does the 2man game pole work , never thought of that.

Cool story, I love seeing new people get involved, you may have hooked them for good. Might be a good idea to steer them to this site so they can learn the right way from the start rather than trying to "learn  " from the "pro's" on tv, and then being disappointed and then trying to unlearn bad habits, will certainly save them time to go this way from the start.

That sounds like a cool little push. Can you show a diagram of how it was done? I love learning new push concepts/ tactics. I also love getting new people into hunting. I've done enough hunting for ten guys. When they get a deer, I'm more excited than they are. Damn, I love hunting, even more so with good people/friends.
If you want to kill a deer you have to be in the woods.

Very cool story.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
