Re: What did this ?
That what I thought, not use to seeing rubs on trees of that size.

Yes, same here this would be in my area the exception to the rule. I've only came across 1 rub like this ever.

Re: What did this ?
My first thought was if it's not a deer maybe a scratching post for a small bear or a bobcat.

, I know it wasn't meant to be funny but I laughed a bit, because it's honestly a great possibility

Re: What did this ?
I have seen a lot of rubs just like that one around me. Most often on small maples and beech trees.

Re: What did this ?
I think bobcats generally do a lot more damage and scratch longer horizontally.
You can see from the scratch patterns how the buck was twisting his head a couple times. At least that is what I am seeing. We had one buck in NW PA that only left rubs like that for years, 'til he disappeared.

No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.

Re: What did this ?
With rubs you can sometimes get more info out of them than a guy would think... A rub like that one tells me something about the buck. Most bucks rub trees mainly with the section of antler beam that is between there forehead and browtine. That works like a file and removes the bark from the tree and then you see the deep scratches like on the tree shown above the bare spot. In this case, it appears the buck either can't get the tree between his brow tines, or he has some stickers near his bases and the points are coming in contact rather than the antler bases...

I was wondering that , thanks for clarifying. Either way proably a slob I'm hoping.
