Big Buck Tendancies

Unread postby Stevew77 » Sun Nov 11, 2012 4:59 am

Guys lets hear what you have learned over the years about big bucks. From bedding to movement and "out of the box" actions that led you to success. Dan often talks about them being different creatures and I'm still trying to learn their bedding and movement that allows them to mature. A friend just got back from Ohio and he said he had a mature buck school him pretty good and remain bedded within 75 yards of his setup the whole morning without him even knowing.

In pressured environments I think its important to understand that bucks survive to be mature by avoiding places people go during daylight. And by bedding where they rarely ever smell human scent... We can get really good at predicting where "good bucks" bed based on terrain and cover, but the actual true mature bucks tend to always find that spot thats overlooked... Remember, they don't just have to survive you, they usually also have to survive guys walking around or doing drives with guns... So taking a hard look at your property and thinking outside the box as to where no one goes on the property can be the key to the biggest buck... Once you find that area, then key in on the terrain and cover that create bedding in that area...

So a good approach would be to take a map and mark all hunting areas with an X and then hunt outside those areas?

Kills at my new club are down 50% this year compared to last year and only 4 "good" bucks have been killed. This is a management club and they have selective cut the timber 75% this year. Some blame the logging, others blame coyote

Mark where everyone hunts and try to find stuff that gets ignored.
