Need advice quick please. Hunting fields in the morning??

Unread postby SHoff10 » Tue Nov 06, 2012 2:50 pm

I am currently hunting in Northeastern Kansas...we've seen a few shooters with one monster 180".... But obviously he wouldn't come within 100 yards.

Anyways, almost everywhere we hunt are draws that run through all cut crop fields and/or crp.

How do you get to a set like this in the morning when you have to walk through cut fields to get to your stand?? That's our only option. Go out extra early? Go out at daylight?

Thanks in advance!!

Go out at daylight... If you blow the deer up your hunting that greatly decreases your chances... Be ready on the walk in!

I hunt a piece that is almost impossible tin get to in the morning because you have to pass through open fields. I have two remedies for this generally, first choice, if you can stand it get in super early, an hou or so before daybreak, deer cannot see in the dark so I have generally found that the deer I do move will be almost like a soft bump, but you have to move slow with the wind in your favor. Second option, go in later, wait until 8 or 9 am to get in there, but if the deer have a visual on you it can screw you up. Good luck buddy!

Hard to say without an Ariel, but in SD my situation was similar and i burned part of the least productive field to get on the backside of a prime draw. Not the best scenario but on a limited time hunt you hate to not hunt mornings. Now if you only have one crop field you may not have a choice.

Also as was stated before me, i went in well before daylight. But i did have 4 other defined and heavily used feeding fields to catch deer moving off back to bed.

Deer can see very well in the dark. Any animal that has eyes that light up when you shine them have excellent night vision.

I beg to differ, deer can see best in low light conditions. They may be able to see a little better during a full moon period or something like that, but by no means do they have "night vision". Atleast that's my understanding.

Certainly was not saying night vision in the sense we know night vision as. But they see very well at night.

Deer eyes amplify the available light alot.

It actually hampers their vision on a bright day if there is snow on the ground.

I would think that they have no trouble seeing on a very cloudy no moon night.
But they also key on movement.

I agree
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

It's been my experience that if your quiet and keep the wind in your favor it's a soft bump in the morning. I have an out of town spot I go to that you have to cross one large field to get to anything huntable. I generally am in the stand 1.5 to 2 hrs before daylight. Two weeks ago I made this trip and did have a deer blow when I was about 50 yds from the stand. I got to the stand and ten minutes in a heard a grunt come right from where I heard the deer blow. A half hour after day light the 2.5 yr old 8 pointer came in at 11 yds. He was broken on his right side so I let him walk. Seems like I don't generally see any deer until mid morning. This was on extremely low pressured private land however, from now on I think I'll just wait.
