Hurricane Sandy stalk

Unread postby NatureBoy » Thu Nov 01, 2012 4:56 am

At noon (30th) I went outside of the building at work to dump the trash and the sun was out! Earlier it had been blowing and dumping rain with Sandy still on the horizon. I knew I had to take advantage of the window of opportunity with this break in the weather. I grabbed my camo FrogToggs and bow and was out in the woods about 10 minutes later. The wind was blowing steady from the SE. I made a big loop around bedding to put the wind in my favor and then started in, very slowly stalking, stopping, watching, listening. Almost immediately a white flag caught my eye. It was about 100 yards to the N and was browsing on the acorns that the storm had brought down. After a couple minutes of observation, I could tell it was a buck with a small chocolate rack. Predator mode took over and I crept closer to him, one careful step at a time. At one point the wind swirled and I thought I was busted. He looked up and then stepped into a pine thicket and vanished. I wasn’t sure if the hunt was over or not. After a few minutes of waiting I crept on, low and soft. I closed the gap from where I last saw him and slowly came out from behind a tree. And there he was, standing like a statute, quartering sharply away from me, staring intently at something to the N. This was my chance. I looked down to check where my next footstep would land, stepped out, estimated the shot at 35 yards and let one fly. He instantly dropped, without a sound. I knew immediately that I had misjudged the shot distance and had spined him, right in the neck. So I closed the gap quickly and sent a final arrow through his vitals - and then stood there hardly believing what had just happened. Yeah I know, guys take bigger bucks all the time. I myself have stalked bucks, in fact last year I stalked one from the ground that made this guy look like a dwarf. But I wasn’t able to seal the deal. This one is special to me. He’s my biggest successful ground stalk buck to date. I had a plan, and all of the pieces fell into place. I saw a window of opportunity in the weather and took advantage of it. There was some good fortune involved too. I couldn’t be prouder of this buck, or happier of the outcome of my Hurricane Sandy stalk.

Congrats!
IMHO, anything with a bow is a trophy and to do it on the ground is even more of an accomplishment!!
