30 and in. 35 if conditions are perfect. I regularly practice at 40 and 50 yards.

I would probably take a 40 yd shot if it is wide open...but I prefer to stay at 30 or under.

Max shot is 40... But thats Max. More comfortable right at around 20.. And I don't like them getting closer than 10 yards.

30 and under, I like them close. The buck i shot last year was at 7 yards and that was way to close.

Not gonna take much over 30...I'm an odds type guy and anything under 30 seems to have much better odds than anything over 30.

However, you have to look at western hunters versus eastern amd midwet hunters. Distinct difference in average shot distance...In the end, everyone has to decide for themselves what an actual "ethical" shot distance is for the animal in which they are pursuing.

Re: What's your MAX shot range in the field ?
I hunt with a ML and a bow...with the ML I can take deer out to 250+ yards under the right conditions (little wind, good rangefinder, a knowledge of the load's ballistics, and a good rest).
With a bow my max range is situational as well. Everyone's should be in my opinion...under ideal conditions I might take a shot out to 50 yards....most hunting conditions are not that. I have hunted in crazy windy conditions where I wouldn't shoot beyond 15-20 I was bouncing around so much.
If you want to be a good shot at 40 yards, practice at 60-80 yards.

Re: What's your MAX shot range in the field ?
40 would be the top of my limit and only if everything would line up perfectly. I've never had that happen in a hunting situation yet, so I've never actually shot at a deer farther out than 25 yards. I set up for 30 and in (and only trim that far- I don't like to do any more than I have to). If one happens to hang out outside of that and I still have a clear shot it is just by luck.

Re: What's your MAX shot range in the field ?
The last few years I've been almost able to drive a tack at 40. I prefer 15-30. Bought a 5 pin sight to shoot out to 60 this year, but mainly just for fun. I have a harder time with close shots. I get a lot of deer at under 10 yards and have a hard time with that. Wont take it if I can help it.

I've taken a few out at 36-37 yards. I pretty much don't setup anymore for anything past 30.
