Food shopping run prior to hunting vacation? Who does it?

Unread postby virginiashadow » Fri Oct 26, 2012 4:07 am

I admittedly can't stand shopping, however I do love doing a pre-hunting shopping run. I know when I am hunting hard for a couple weeks that I don't have the time nor energy to go shopping for food for all day hunts. I buy a huge grocery cart full of bread, meats, cheeses, trail mix, mountain dews, and everything else that will help get me through two weeks of all day and 7-8 hour day hunts.

So how about you, do you do a pre-hunting vacation food shopping run?

Yes I always seem to be stopping at Walmart for a grocery grab. I also pre-cook most of my evening meals, vac-seal and freeze them for easy meal prep.

I do the same and load up on granola bars, sandwich meat, cheese, bread, peanut butter and jelly, mini candy bars for all day sits. Funny thing is more than once when I check out the cashier has said "you must be going hunting"!!

I do too! Sandwich meat, cheese, buns, granola bars and 5 hour energy. That little bottle of 5 hour energy works wonders early afternoon when I am nodding off in the stand during all day sits.

I agree, plus it doesn't keep you up all night like overdoses of caffeine. It seems that 1-2pm time slot for me is the roughest for me energy wise. After several days on stand I need that extra push to stay up and alert.

BigHunt....good luck on your nine day hunt! My vacation doesn't start until next Thursday.....50 more hours of work until two weeks off!

I hunt away from home a lot so I do a hunting shopping spree quite often.

When I looked at potential motels for staying in when I am out of state...I found one on the backside of a small rural shooping center. In it...Dollar General, Advanced Auto, McDs, A grocery store, a chinese restaraunt, a mexican restaraunt, Little Caesars, a bank with ATM, and within a 500ft walk...a nice local bar/grill akin to a Buffalo Wild Wings.

Motel has a fridge in it, so we shop right there in the plaza. Saves me a ton of time shopping before heading out of state, and more room for gear since I don't have to bring anything in the cooler (should I get a deer I fill it up).

I always forget something though when I do pre-hunt shopping. Never fails.

My friends used to all make fun of me because I carried a tote with food and snacks and drinks all during my hunts.

Funny, I always had extra to share when they got back to the truck starving and dehydrated.

Just go to my freezer for some venison...

Usually make a couple dishes that last for a few dinner meals like Venison Stroganoff, Shepards Pie, Lasagna...
Some ham & eggs or muffins.
Snickers and granola bars.
PB & J sandwiches.
Water

Keep it simple!

Oh yeah - maybe a beer or two at night to reflect on my day in the woods! 8-)

Peanut butter cliff bars, 20 oz water, and 5hr energy wild berry... Pretty much staples when sitting all day for me! Like BH leave tomorrow... Been waiting long time for tomorrow to arrive. Everyone have a safe and enjoyable hunt! Good luck!
