Crazy doe behavior- Estrus?
I saw a doe tonight that was nuts- she ran the adjacnet field for a few hundred yards and disappeared in the brush. Thought she was spooked by something.....maybe the ever prevailent coyotes we have now....or some silly young buck.
About 10 min later i see what i percevie to be her to run back my way- blows through some brush full tilt and into the woods in front of me.....runs a few circles, rounds my stand and runs into the woods in the new direction.
Just down right bizarre....she seemed lost..never really slowed from a run
Tol dmy buddy and he said she was coming in (to estrus). Thinking about it, I think the last time i had seen such behvaio there was buck a trailing. Obviously not the case today.
Think she was coming in or crazy doe behavior relates to the rut?

Re: Crazy doe behavior- Estrus?
I had a doe and fawn do full speed 200 yard sprints past my stand back and forth at least 6 times the other night.I think they were just playin around. There is another doe that is known as the bucking bronco. It kicks its hind legs off the ground like a bull trying to shed a rider.I think that one has issues.

I've seen a couple deer do this before, I think they were fawns but couldn't say for sure. If they are fawns there are probably just playing around and blowing off some steam or something like that, maybe older deer do it too but I don't really know. They might be crazy or it might be nothing.

Initially spooked by neighbor hunter taking a shot at her? Runs into your woods, circling your stand catches your scent, bugs out again, takes off again?

I had a young buck come TEARING in past my stand once, with blood on his side. I have no idea where the closest hunter to me could have been that shot him (bow season). He ran down wind of me I believe, and blew out of there as quick as he came in.

Re: Crazy doe behavior- Estrus?
It could presumably be from another hunter- but this deer was running near full tilt for quite some time....
It sort of reminded me of something my german shorthair would do...just full throttle zig zagging in an area for no reason. I was really hoping she wouldve stopped... couldve ended her insanity and began my freezer quest.
The coyote population blew up around here.....saw 2 last year in its entirity...guessing a dozen in the past 2 weeks.....not seeing many fawns at all.
Seems to early for one to be "in"..but ya never know
As for EHD- God i hope not. There have been a few cases in NY, but nothing like what Michigan has ruining their herd right now. That scares me big time

I have seen that a few times the past few years while out turkey hunting, she would run out jump and kick and then run off to another spot and do it again, then would go up in the woods for 15 minutes and come out and do it again, I always thought it was just a deer having a little fun.

My guess would be just playing.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I agree with that...
But some do go into estrous early or late... I have seen bucks hounding a certain doe as early as September, and as late as January. I don't think this is the case based on your observations, but just wanted to make it clear that can and has happened.

My plausible guess (???) lies here too guys.
Just a goofey deer playing or doing goofy things
The number of bucks (those the vast vast majority are 1 yos) is about as high as coyotes...so if she was..she wouldve had an entourage in pursuit especially if she was one of the first...

Re: Crazy doe behavior- Estrus?
Every time I have seen this same exact thing it has usually been a young deer. Seems like sometimes they have some extra energy and have to burn it off like a young dog sprinting back and forth in the yard like a maniac. I watched a doe fawn do this last year on small cattail island. Must have ran back and forth at full speed 5-6 times and kicking like a bucking bronco just like goldtip described. Pretty funny to watch and you could just see the frustration on momma does face like........"stop messing around and get over here NOW!!!"
It wouldn't be unheard of for a doe to come into estrous already either. It seems every year a few do and it gets the bucks wound up for a week or so. I have seen chasing a full month before the normal peak of early-mid Nov.

Re: Crazy doe behavior- Estrus?
I once had a fawn do this two years in a row...I don't get into naming bucks, but we had to name her "Spaz"...she'd run across an open field...and zip back...and do it all over again. She did the same thing the follow hunting season until someone arrowed her.
Pretty funny to see actually...just sitting on stand...and then all of a sudden...flash! Fur and hide....
