I shot at my first public land buck tonight but unfortunatly I missed. I set up sitting in a field on the ground, mixed with beans and foxtail for good cover. The buck was at 45 yards when I shot and I thought he was at 35 yards. I was very surprised to see this caliber of buck on public. Not a monster but about 18 wide and heavy with 6 inch tines or so. His body size was big as well compared to the yearlings in the field. He came off a point I scouted last spring which had one big faint bed on it with a rub next to it. I remembered that bed before I went out to hunt and figured one would be using it tonight.
I was really upset after I missed but realized that I knew exaclty where that buck was bedded and he came out right where I thought he would with the wind that I had. So it felt really good to get that much of it together on public land. And like I said before, that was my first shot ever at a public land buck so it can only get better. Saw a total of 3 bucks and 2 does out in the beans. I shot at 6:45pm.
I noticed many scrapes on the field edge which is basically a double inside corner. After I shot two of the yearlings stood in the field and were not alarmed or didnt seem to be. I wonder if I should try it again?

Sounds like a successful hunt to me.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

A clean miss is better than a bad shot. You're getting some action this season though. I hope to be launching arrows at nice bucks in the next few weeks. Get back in there next time and knock em down Bighills.

How close we're you to his bed? Was he aware that you shot at him?

About 100 yards from his bed. Wind was in my face on a ridgetop. He came in and when I shot and thought I hit him, but apparently not looking at the arrow and for blood. His reaction was to run right back to his bed it sounded like. Not sure though. One other deer ran off with him but two little bucks kept feeding which I thought was strange for public. However I think this spot is not hunted that often. Its a pain in the but to get to there, which puts a smile on my face because I realize less guys are willing to go there. Thanks for the encouragement guys.
