Deer Blocks

Unread postby Mike Foss » Fri Oct 12, 2012 1:10 am

Does anyone know what ingredient is in those deer feed blocks that bind the grains together so they dont fall apart? Please PM me if you know the answer. Thanks

Mike

I thought some were molasses but I think the ones that look like a stone are just formed when the minerals in them are wet and stick together? I think you are talking about mineral blocks? If not sorry.

If you are talking about the Purina Deer Blocks or any of the other corn and sweet feed based blocks, those are held together with molasses. We used them in Connecticut for trail cameras and they hold up great even after a rain.

I use to make my own blocks. I'll try and find my old recipe .

8 cups corn
3 cups honey cheerios
6 1/2 cups sugar
2 cups Dark corn syrup
1 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup molases

These get hard as a rock !

Swampthing did you form them in a pail or icecream bucket? Once they hardened were they easy to pour them out of the forming mold?

I used those small throw away aluminum pans that are used like a meatloaf or bread. I cooked everything together all the sugars and molases and when they turned liquid I would hurry and mix in the corn and cheerios. You have to be quick cause it gets hard pretty quick after removing from stove.

Cool.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
