Slow weekend
Since I am done in MN I have been focusing on WI. I hunted two different farms this weekend. Even with the blaze orange, I thought the weather seemed perfect, but it was slow. Did others experience this? I think with all the crops coming off so fast and all of the leaves knocked down in the last few days, the deer, and especially mature bucks are left feeling vulnerable and slipped them right into nocturnal mode.
Both nights I only saw deer at last light and they seemed spooked.

Re: Slow weekend
It was very slow for me too the last 3 days especially considering the very cool temps. I thought hunting was going to be much better.
Friday-nothing.
Saturday-young 8pt at 4:15 P.M. and nothing after that.
Sunday-had one coming just before closing but never saw if it was a buck or doe.
Last night on my way home it seemed like deer were everywhere after dark. Just not near my stand! I think you may be right about crops and leaves. The strong winds really messed things up on Friday and earlier on Saturday too. This is usually about the time the deer figure out they are being hunted much more and seem to go into hiding. I hate to call it the October lull since they bucks are still there but they just travel less in daylight. Things will really ramp up as usual in the next few weeks with pre rut.

Re: Slow weekend
Central Wisconsin was rocking for me. Saturday night especially. I had bucks fighting, running, grunting, it felt like November.
I went shining tonight too and they were out in a lot of spots thick.

Re: Slow weekend
I got onto a descent 8 point tonite. He came outa the swamp with a good half hour of shooting time left. And yesterday on the way home I spotted what i thought was a cow next to a small pond next to the highway. I hurried up and pulled over and here it was a horse of a buck, about 140 class" He was making a scrape. He was with a yearling buck.

Re: Slow weekend
I saw a lot of young bucks over the weekend, even though I worked Sat and Sun. The Friday afternoon hunt I Saw two different six points. Saturday I saw a fork behind my house during the last hour of daylight. Yesterday, while working, I hit the brakes hard at 12:22 p.m. as a 2.5 year old 8 point walked out in front of me.

Re: Slow weekend
Saturday evening nothing . Sunday evening 1 spike buck. Hunting for a doe and have a buck at 15 yards. That's how it usually goes!! It was slow though considering the weather. I was hunting public close to home and youth hunting pressure was very minimal! Had my orange on though!

Re: Slow weekend
Oddly enough I only saw one buck on stand this whole weekend, even though there were about 4 yearling running around in the area and I would usually see them with plenty of light. Did see a few does and fawns, the does seemed a bit spookier I thought but only on Sunday once the wind had calmed down and they could really start seeing how much things changed with no crops and no leaves.

Re: Slow weekend
It was slower than expected for sure. I got some nice trailcam pictures during the week leading up to this weekend but when I actually got out there I only saw does.

Re: Slow weekend
I'll also add that Fri, Sat and Sun night the deer were coming out of the woodwork after dark. I had deer in my headlights all 3 nights.

Re: Slow weekend
Saturday and Sunday I saw lots of does around. They were coming through later in the morning than they usually do. I didn't see one buck, although my son said one came in behind me in some thick stuff around 8am. He was using a gun for the youth hunt and didn't shoot because he wasn't sure of my position beyond the deer.
