#3 Down

Unread postby bowhunter15 » Sat Oct 06, 2012 2:04 pm

I went and sat in a small woodlot this afternoon. I've pretty much stayed out of there for the past 3 weeks or so, waiting for the right conditions to try and see a nice buck. Well, with the cold front I went out, even though the winds were pretty stiff. As I got there, I could hear the combine running. Sure enough, he was cutting the corn right bordering the 5 acre lot I wanted to hunt. He already made 3 passes right at the edge. I walked in anyways. As soon as I got in the woods, I jumped a doe and fawn. Set up anyway, and once or twice I saw the same two deer moving through the woods out of range. The farmer finished the field he was working on and went to another, that bordered another edge of the woodlot. He was making long passes so it would be around 15 minutes or so between when I could see him through the trees. About 30 minutes before dark, I looked behind me and a doe was walking broadside into my lane at 15 yards. I could've shot right away, but chose to turn the camera on. By the time I got it manually focused on the deer, she had walked out of the land and into thick stuff. She came out the other side about 30 yards. I drew and stopped her. There was one big arch shaped tree between me and her and she was just underneath the top of the arch from my vantage point. I put the 30 yard pin on her and shot... and the arrow hit the tree. In my site window the tree was just above my 20 yard pin, but it made sense because the tree was about 17 yards away. She jumped and trotted off but didn't look too scared.

Then right as I lost camera light I packed the camera and started to lower the bow. When it was about 5 feet off the ground, I heard footsteps, and quickly pulled the bow back up. I nocked an arrow and could see the deer coming right back through the same path. When she got in the open, I mouth bleated and let the arrow fly. Perfect hit. Watched her run 30 yards, stop, and tip over right on the trail leading back to the car, silent as could be. Needless to say, I'm SOLD on my new broadheads. This is by far the quickest I've ever had a deer expire. Since I dragged her back halfway to the car and gutted in the fresh cut cornfield, my set is pretty much still completely un-ruined. I'm going back in the morning in hopes that Mr. Big will show up in that 30 degree calm, partly cloudy sky!

Congrats again! You are whacking and stacking them this year. What broadhead are you currently using?

Congrats and good luck!

Congrats.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Bowhunter,

Is there not a doe limit where you hunt or are you allowed to whack as many as you can since you are working with the farmer on his land?

Good job by the way on the three already.

One of them I shot in Minnesota. The two I shot off of this WI farm are in a regular unit, which means no unlimited antlerless tags. However, there are a limited number of bonus tags available by unit for the regular units at $12 a piece. There were still over a thousand left for this unit when I bought my last one.
