Indiana Opener Finally

Unread postby Redman232 » Tue Oct 02, 2012 6:24 am

Looks like an east wind tonight, hunting a thick funnel tonight about 100 yds from a nice 10 pointers bed. Hopefully he'll get thirsty before he heads into the corn or after apples, because of the wind, I think where I'll have to set up will be minimally invasive. He's got another bed about 200 yds away under a mature white oak in standing corn that I've been wanting to hunt since I found it in June but the wind is wrong. I jumped him in early June when I put in a kill plot in the creek bottom and haven't set foot on it since then but have seen him behind the barn munching on apples 1/2 after dark, so he's still there. Any other Hoosiers who have been chomping at the bit watching all these WI slobs drop?

Yes sir I have. Been slightly painful not being able to get out there myself. First sit is in about an hour and a half. Good luck to you.

Oh yeah, this E wind is putting a damper on my plan for today...

Illinois opened today too. Sat for a few hours in my urban spot, had two does come in around 5 PM. They still had a fawn with spots that I is very small. Decided earlier in September that if they came in and I couldn't figure out which one momma was I'd give both the does a pass. At 8 yards broadside it was tough, I did rehearse everything. Drawing, putting the pins on them and didn't get busted. I don't know if I'm getting soft by letting them walk. :D I guess there is always later in the week!

Pretty good sit last night, got busted by two does, shortly after sitting down in my stand, not sure why, they were upwind and then @ 7:00 had a small 6 walk from 25 yds to 5yds. 7:12 had my target 10 pointer at 25 yds but he was walking and with my recurve I was afraid if I bleated to stop him and then shot he would have ducked my arrow or I would have made a bad shot, 20 yards is really my effective range. But the redneck in me just about came out. He never new I was there so hopefully I'll have another shot at him.

Nice redman! I'm a recurve and longbow guy myself. Often I get asked why I would bother hunting with a recurve when I could be twice as efficient with a compound due to accuracy at longer ranges. The answer is I love getting them in close! By the way. Don't know if you do this or not but I prefer to shoot them walking as opposed to stopping them. At twenty yards or less I just aim for the shoulder while they are walking and they always walk right into it! I know you said you had him at twenty five. I know what you mean. It's amazing how much more difficult a walking shot can be by only adding five yards! Good luck!

This is actually the first year I have hunted exclusively with my recurve, I had never invested the time needed to be comfortable with it. I love hunting with a compound bow, I just haven't shot a deer over 20 yds with it ever (out of approx. 25) and typically the spots I end up hunting don't allow for much further shots so I figured why not. I forgot to mention in my previous post, when I first saw both the bucks they were both stretching which makes me think they just stood up? I left my lone wolf on the tree and my younger brother is going to be able to hunt Thursday evening with the same wind I had, so I explained to him where my stand was and how to get to it and told him to go in there and kill him. (He shoots a Switchback) So he should be able to zip an arrow in there. If you don't mind sharing what public in Indiana do you hunt? I go to a small place in Noble County and a few in SE Indiana.

I'm hunting Willow Slough. First year here. I live just across the border in Illinois so I thought I would open my options by getting an Indiana tag. Good luck!

I don't know much about Willow Slough, Lasalle WMA is over that way also, while I've never been there, I believe it is pretty marshy there is Willow Slough doesn't work out for you.

Redman, I live in Noble county and it has been producing dandy bucks the last few years. I don't have permission to hunt here but I do get to see all the "horn porn" from friends.

Do you hunt Chain o Lakes? Check out pigeon river in Lagrange county, just north of Noble. Loads of land and unfortunately, a lot of EHD there right now.
