Mapping trophy whitetails
I enjoy reading anything about whitetails and am thinking about buying this book. However, since finding The Hunting Beast, I am pretty much commited to bed hunting. During the rut, funnels and pinch points are easy to find so I don't need any help with that. Since I will spend my time scouting in spring and locating beds, seeing the trails in and out and picking my killing tree, is is really worth learing Brad's methods of reading terrain? tell me your thoughts before I spend the money.

The book is worth every nickle for understanding topography and wind... go to your local library and borrow it for free

Re: Mapping trophy whitetails
It's a good book to have around. However, I have found that these funnels he shows have deer move through them from different bedding areas. If you were hunting bedding areas that you scouted, you would still be strategically hunting the same deer but closer to their beds.
It does showcase some good spots to hunt during the rut though.

I read it in 2006 and killed my biggest buck to date. Prob just luck, but I like to think I learned something from it.

Re: Mapping trophy whitetails
It's a good book to lay out the basics of topo funnels and hunting them. I learned a lot more or it all clicked with me form the Hill Country DVD, in connection with my understanding of topos. He shows a field draw or deep cut, saddle, converging points, shelf, etc. in the book. Worth the read if you haven't done so yet but if you read it once you'll probably have everything you need out of it.

Re: Mapping trophy whitetails
I read it and got all excited, then went to my areas via a topo map and cant find anything like he points out. His stand placement is different then Dans, in that he only hunts the leward side with a strong (15mph+)steady wind. I find myself skimming through most of my books this time of year for a refresher. I think a good book is a longterm investment, worth the money. I still think Dans 2 videos have opened my eyes more then anything I have read/seen elsewhere.
